Information Literacy Defined
  • Within the context of lifelong learning and
the broad information continuum which ranges
from data to knowledge to wisdom, information
literacy competency focuses on six broad
    abilities
  • to recognize the need for information
  • to know how to access information
  • to understand how to evaluate
    information
  • to know how to synthesize information
  • to be able to communicate information
  • to be able to ethically use
    information

7

  • FirstSearch Databases
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic
  • Constructing a search
  • Performing a search
  • Broadening narrowing a topic
  • Recognizing full text, citation options

16
Improve Your Search Techniques Boolean operators
and, or, not can
always be used to limit searches
And Combines search terms so that results
contain all of the search words.
i.e. orchestra and conductor and arrange
  • Or Combines search terms so that results
contain at least one of the search words.
    i.e. adolescent or teenager
    CMS or College Music Society
  • Not Excludes terms that are not desired.
    i.e. book not review performance
    not solo

17
You can expand search results by using Wildcards
and Truncation
Truncation represented by the asterisk (). Use
the to replace the end of a word. For
example type music to find citations
containing the words music, musical, musically,
etc.
Wildcards represented by the question mark (?).
Use the ? for unknown characters For example,
type wom?n to find citations containing woman,
women, or womyn.
18
Bibliographic Style Aids
Why are there styles?
What is their purpose?

library Guides are online

19
The Golden RuleAcademic Integrity Avoiding
Plagiarism
  • Do your own work
  • Give credit where credit is due

20
Cite Your Sources Properly
  • Let the reader know whose thoughts are being
used to make the point and provide the
    appropriate documentation
  • Avoid plagiarism
  • Do not copy someone elses work. Its fraud!
  • No person shall submit as his own to an
instructor any work which contains ideas or
materials taken from another without full
acknowledgment of the author the source.
    McKendrees Academic Integrity Policy

21
The Benefits of Citing Properly
  • Many students do not seem to realize that
whenever they cite a source, they are
strengthening their writing. Citing a source,
whether paraphrased or quoted, reveals thatthey
have performed research well and synthesized
thefindings into their own argument. Using
sources showsthat a student is engaged in "the
great conversation," theworld of ideas, and that
the student is aware of otherthinkers' positions
on the topic. By quoting (and citing)writers who
support the student's position, the studentgains
strength for the position. By responding
reasonably to those who oppose it, the student
shows that there are valid counter arguments. In
a nutshell, citing helps make the essay stronger
    and sounder.
