WHY CERTIFICATION?

Why is this being done?
  • Changes in the focus of medical education over
    the past few years
  • programs have needed to review their education
    vs. service issues
  • more structure and formality has been brought to
    the process of education through the development
    of a more codified curriculum
  • Unintended consequences

Why is this being done?
  • Recognition of the need for Program Directors and
    Coordinators to be full time to manage the
    requirements of core competencies, accreditation
    and work hours regulations
  • Need for training administrators to have and
    maintain a high level of knowledge, skills and
    abilities to manage the day-to-day activities of
    the training program
  • Create a national standard

  • Recognition for achieving/meeting national
    standards
  • Receiving national certification is
    acknowledgement of your professionalism and
    knowledge
  • To be a GME Training Program Administrator is to

Successful Completion 80
  • Certification IS an assessment of your knowledge-
    it is NOT a test.
  • Successful completion is based upon 80 correct
    answers in each of the knowledge content areas
    in the Work Effort Tools and the Monitored
    Assessment
  • If you do not successfully complete all content
    areas the first time, you have one year to
    complete the process without charge. After one
    year passes, you would need to begin the
    application process again, including payment of
    fees.

  • Rumblings about certification for coordinators-
    something about a TAGME organization?
  • Coordinators were polled for interest level-
    should the AADPRT Coordinators Section look into
    TAGME? YES!

Task Force Charge
  • Develop TOOLS (questions) for Work Effort
    Products and for the Monitored Assessment using
    TAGMEs Standard Templates

    call and email

    approval to the TAGME Board Directors for the
    November 3-5, 2006 Fall Meeting.

TAGME Update(posted 12/29/05) Another 17
coordinators from pediatrics and general surgery
were recommended and approved for certification
at the Fall board meeting of the National Board
of Certification for Training Administrators of
Graduate Medical Education Programs (TAGME). In
addition, psychiatry has been approved for
permanent membership on the TAGME Board of
Directors, with assessment tools approved and
certification now available to psychiatry program
coordinators.  The following specialties have
developed task forces and have been approved to
develop their assessment tools  Diagnostic
Radiology Thoracic Surgery Vascular
Surgery Neurology Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation Obstetrics-Gynecology As interest
in coordinator certification continues to grow,
TAGME Board members have been invited to make
numerous presentations at national meetings.

Of note
  • Psychiatry is the 3rd clinical specialty to have
    tools approved for certification.
  • Psychiatry is the 1st clinical specialty to
    receive approval following successful pilots
    conducted by Surgery and Pediatrics.

Tools In the Works
  • Vascular Surgery and Thoracic Surgery
    successfully submitted their tools in February.
    They plan to offer the certification assessment
    at their respective Spring meetings
  • Diagnostic Radiology plans to submit their tools
    at the Spring TAGME Board of Directors Meeting
  • Neurology, OB-GYN, and Physical Medicine and
    Rehabilitation, have submitted formal requests
    and are in the process of developing tools

  • March 10, 2006, the FIRST TAGME certification
    assessment will be offered for Psychiatry General
    Residency Program Administrators
  • 10 training administrators have registered to
    take the assessment

    subspecialties
  • Poll forms are in the back of the room. Please
    indicate if you would be interested in serving on
    a task force
