New Graduate Student Online Orientation
  • Thanks for taking the time to complete this short
    online orientation. The following slides will
    walk you through some of the many services
    available to all of our graduate students.
  • As you begin your time as a Hamline student, we
    want to help make your transition into the
    Hamline community as easy as possible.
  • If you ever have any questions, the Graduate
    Student Life Office (GSLO) is a good first
    place to check in with. We will help direct you
    to the right people to address your needs. Call

Dean of Students Office
  • The Dean of Students Office provides leadership
    to the Division of Student Affairs and Auxiliary
    Services (Food Service and Bookstore), and works
    directly with students, faculty, and staff to
    provide services and programs that enhance
    student life and community.
  • Specifically, the Dean of Students Office serves
    as the point of contact for students who want to
    talk about issues of harassment, discrimination,
    and sexual assault coordinates the judicial
    system formulates and reviews policies.
  • Emergency loans are provided by the Dean's Office
    of each graduate school. The graduate school
    deans offices should cover this in their
    description.

Graduate Student Life Office
  • The Graduate Student Life Office (GSLO) is a part
    of Student Activities and Leadership Development
    within the Division of Student Affairs.
  • GSLO strives to connect graduate students to the
    Hamline community. GSLO cultivates student and
    organizational development by providing an
    inclusive environment for leadership and
    networking opportunities, and awareness of campus
    services.

  • GSLO currently supports four graduate student
    organizations at Hamline
  • Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) The Graduate
    Student Assembly is a new organization on campus
    that represents the interests of graduate
    students. The purpose of the organization is to
    serve as an advisory board that makes
    recommendations and bring together graduate
    students.
  • Hamline International Graduate Student
    Association (HIGSA) HIGSA's mission is to
    empower students to develop academically,
    professionally, and culturally more fully
    utilizing the resources of Hamline University. 
  • West Egg Literati Their mission is to create a
    social community for Graduate Liberal Studies
    students that promotes writing, reading,
    publishing, and literary discussion.
  • Nonprofit Management Graduate Students
    Networking Organization To develop an
    institutionalized networking system at Hamline
    University for Graduate School of Nonprofit
    Management Students that will allow present
    students to connect with other students, alumni
    and faculty, and to provide opportunities for
    networking/connection with the nonprofit
    management community.

Counseling and Health Services
  • All counseling services offered at Hamline are
    confidential and free of cost
  • Counseling appointments can be scheduled by
    calling x2204 walk-in appointments are also
    available Monday-Fridays from 1100 am - noon
  • Health Services are available to all students no
    cost to consult with a nurse--only immunizations
    lab tests have fees
  • Health Services are on a walk-in basis from
    830-1100 Monday-Friday, and in the afternoons
    by appointment. All services are confidential

Dining Services
  • There are five dining locations on the Hamline
    campus to serve the needs of the graduate school
    students
  • All locations accept Piper Points, cash, or check
  • Any Hamline student can save money and time by
    adding "Piper Points" to their Hamline ID card.

  • Hamline University is committed to ensuring all

Multicultural and International Student Affairs
  • The Center for Multicultural and International
    Student Affairs (MISA) offers support and
  • advocacy for international students and graduate
    students of color. MISA also sponsors
  • and supports all-campus events that help members
    of the university learn about issues of
  • diversity, multiculturalism, internationalism and
    social justice. It
  • Advises and works with 12 student of color and
    international student organizations
  • Traditional cultural awareness and history
    events, including Hispanic Heritage Month, Native
    American Awareness Week, Black History Month,
    Asian Heritage Month, Kwanzaa Celebration, and
    Hmong New Year
  • Other activities and programs provide
    opportunities for participants to learn about
    diversity and multiculturalism issues, including
    World Fest, Social Justice Symposium and the
    Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration

Student Administrative Services Financial Aid
  • A FAFSA should be filed every year. File on-line
    at www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • Graduate/License students are generally eligible
    for Federal Stafford Loans.
  • Loans are usually disbursed at the beginning of
    fall and spring semester. If you borrow more
    than your costs, you will receive a refund check
    shortly after your funds arrive.
  • You must be registered at least half-time at
    Hamline (4 credits per semester) in order to
    qualify for Federal Stafford loans.
  • Generally most half time degree seeking students
    are eligible for federal student loans to help
    assist in payment of tuition and educational
    costs at Hamline University. In order to
    students to apply for student loans they must
    complete the Free Application For Federal Student
    Aid (FAFSA) each year. This can be done on line
    at www.fafsa.ed.gov

Service Learning Volunteerism
  • Service-Learning means learning to serve,
    participate, and contribute to community.
  • OSLV supports community involvement among Hamline
    students, faculty, and staff. The

    economic and racial justice

  • Bring Home Homelessness
  • Opportunities to go to New Orleans to help with
    recovery efforts from the devastation caused by
    Hurricane Katrina

Office of Safety and Security
  • Hamline University Office of Safety and Security
    provides twenty-four hour a day service
  • for the Hamline University Community. These
    services include
  • emergency response,
  • investigation, patrol, escort service,
  • parking management/enforcement
  • and assistance in a variety of problem-solving
    activities.

Parking On Campus
  • Safety and Security Services is responsible for
    overseeing the establishment of parking policies
    and procedures for all students, faculty, staff,
    and visitors. Because the university is located
    in a residential area, parking is a very
    important issue
  • Students are expected to have parking permits for
    the lots on campus. During the school year,
    university lots require a Hamline parking permit
    to park weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Reserved"
    permits are always required to park in reserved
    parking spots, and reserved parking is
    enforced twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year
  • All Hamline students, faculty, and staff, parking
    in university lots or on area streets, ARE
    REQUIRED to register their vehicles online with
    Safety and Security Services for identification
    purposes.  Vehicle registration is an important
    safety and security issue. In case of an
    emergency, vehicle registration allows security
    to easily identify vehicle owners in university
    parking lots and on area streets. Registration
    is necessary whether or not a parking permit is

  • The fee for a permit is 130. All faculty and
    staff are eligible to purchase parking permits.
    Students must enter a lottery. (See Parking
    Permit Application Process for Students)
  • Snow Emergency on Campus After a snowfall and
    when snow is present on lots to facilitate snow
    removal efforts, there will be NO PARKING in the
    following lots on the days indicated, from 11
    p.m. until 7 a.m. the next morning.

Religious and Spiritual Life Office
  • The Religious and Spiritual Life Office fosters
    and supports spiritual and ethical development of
    persons from diverse religious traditions and
    practices, and promotes peace, justice, and
    service. The Religious and Spiritual Life Office
    provides students
  • Programs to better understand ones own and other
    religious traditions
  • Buddhist meditation, Muslim prayer, Mishpacha
    (Jewish Life), and multifaith programs
  • Address of peace and justice from a faith
    perspective
  • Confidential pastoral care, support, and dialogue
  • Referrals for local churches, synagogues,
    mosques, and other religious organizations
