What if George W. Bush were to?
  • Announce a new initiative,
  • No Peoples left behind in the
    Middle East
  • Assert that his next administration will
recognize a Palestinian state without specifying
borders, as Truman did for Israel in 1948
  • Expand the Broader Middle East Initiative
  • From A loose program of the willing for
    liberalization and reform
  • To A permanent alliance that would encompass
    political, military and reconstruction concerns

14
What if George W. Bush were to ?
  • Extend the mandate for the 9/11 commission to
include periodic updates on the status of the
    War on Terrorism.
  • Create an Ombudsman for the Justice
Department that would assess the effects of the
Patriot Act on minorities, particularly Arab- and
    Muslim-Americans

15
Conclusions
  • If Bush gains 10 to 15 of independents by
adopting these or similar ideas, he would bring
in another 1 to 2 million votes
  • The born again vote appears split over the
    Israel-Palestine dispute, even taking into
    account the traditional African-American born
    again support for Democrats
  • Bush might regain some of the lost Muslim support
he had in 2000 by modifying his policies on
    Israel-Palestine and the Patriot Act
