2-week Primary Teachers Projectpart of Comenius
in-service training
  • Part of Lifelong Learning programme funded by EC.
    DCSF funds the supply cover for
    teachers taking part.
  • Supports the training of primary school teachers
    engaged in language teaching at KS2
  • 750 for Regional Coordinators with
    responsibility for Primary Language Strategy to
    recruit and support 10 or 15 local teachers to
    undertake a 2 week trip to Spain, France, Germany
    or Italy
  • Trip consists of 1 week of tuition in target
    language 1 week job shadowing in a school in
    the country of language
  • Participants from England receive a contribution
    (up to 525) towards supply cover

Comenius assistants
  • Student teachers or trainee teachers intending to
    take up a teaching career
  • Work for 12-16 hours per week for between 3 and
    10 months in schools and colleges across Europe
  • UK pre-primary, primary, secondary, special
    schools, sixth form, FE colleges and adult
    education institutions can host European Comenius
    assistants
  • Comenius assistants whose native language is
    French, German, Italian or Spanish cannot be
    hosted in secondary schools (this is covered by
    Foreign Language Assistants)
  • European Comenius Assistants often offer more
    than one language
  • Up to 3 schools can share a Comenius assistant

Comenius in-service training
  • For teachers and other school education staff
  • Attend courses and other training activities
    available across Europe on a variety of subjects
    and themes
  • Job-shadowing with an identified partner in one
    of more than 30 other European countries
  • Courses for primary MFL might be eligible for
    DCSF or Welsh Assembly Government funding for
    supply cover
  • Up to 2000 for 1 week, 2500 for 2 weeks and up
    to a maximum of 3000 for 6 weeks. A higher grant
    may be awarded where special needs or
    exceptionally high travel costs are involved.

Comenius preparatory visits
Schools or other institutions
whishing to establish a Comenius School
Partnership (multilateral or bilateral), Comenius
Regio Partnership, Multilateral project, Network
or Accompanying measures project
  • 1-5 days visit to work together with a partner
    institution in another country participating in
    the Lifelong Learning Programme
  • 1 person per visit, but in exceptional cases 2
    staff from the same institution can be awarded a
    grant to undertake a visit together
  • Funding travel subsistence costs (daily rate
    by country of visit details online)

Comenius contact seminars
Schools and other institutions keen to
work in Comenius Partnerships but dont have
partners
  • 3 - 5 days partner finding seminars in Europe
  • Teachers and LA (Comenius Regio) are eligible to
    apply for grants to cover their travel and
    subsistence
  • LA interested in setting up a Comenius Regio
    partnership first Contact Seminar of 2009 takes
    place in Mayschoss, Germany, 17 - 20 September

Comenius Regio Partnerships
  • New Comenius action supporting links between
    local or regional education authorities in the UK
    and other European countries, with a 2-year
    duration
  • 2 partner regions, each with 3 partners
  • -a local/regional education authority
  • -at least one school
  • -at least another relevant local partner
    museum, art gallery, police, library, hospital or
    NGO
  • Assessment of 2009 applications is in
    progress. Notifications
    sent after July 2009.

Comenius Schools Partnerships
Bilateralsecondary, special schools, 6th form
and FE colleges
  • Aiming to improve pupils motivation for foreign
    language learning, exposure to other European
    cultures and education systems.
  • 2 year partnership can include a reciprocal
    10-day exchange for face-to-face project work and
    fund escorts on the ratio of 1 teacher per 5
    pupils
  • At least 10 students 2 teachers (small
    exchange, 17,000 grant) or at least 20
    students4 teachers (large exchange, 24,000
    grant)
  • Involve collaborative cross-curricular work
    before, during and after the exchanges resulting
    in a jointly produced end product
  • Support 20-40 hours language tuition (before the
    exchange) if target language is not taught in
    school

Comenius School Partnerships
Multilateralnursery, primary, secondary, special
schools, sixth form and further education colleges
  • 2 year partnership, minimum 3 schools from 3
    countries involved in Lifelong Learning Progr (at
    least 1 country must be EU member)
  • Are collaborative either curriculum or
    issue-based, i.e. either pupil or teacher-based,
    or a combination
  • Cover any theme such as citizenship, environment,
    stories, crafts or intercultural education
  • Focus on learning processes but often result in
    end products and outcomes, teaching materials,
    etc.

    mobility return visits. For example, 2 teachers
    2 pupils visit 4 mobilities
  • Try to include MFL and CLIL (Content and Language

Development TIPD (England)
  • DCSF programme enabling teachers to experience
    alternative practice abroad for one week
  • Study visits with a focus on CPD and school
    improvement
  • Programme based over a 30-month period
  • Local authorities promote the scheme, select
    teachers and themes they will study. Individuals
    can also suggest visits to their LA
  • There are four providers for the TIPD programme
    LECT, Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, The
    British Council, HTI
