The History of SIGHT AND LIFE
From SIGHT to LIFE
SIGHT AND LIFE was founded 1986 by F. Hoffmann-La
Roche as a philanthropic activity to assist
developing countries in combating vitamin A
deficiency. In our first 20 years of operation,
we invested more than US30 million in support of
around 3,000 humanitarian and scientific projects
in over 80 countries. Since being taken over by
DSM in 2003, SIGHT AND LIFE has expanded our
focus from vitamin A alone to the whole range of
micronutrient nutrition.
9
Our Mission
Aligned to the complexity of the malnutrition
problem
SIGHT AND LIFEs vision is to build bridges for
better nutrition. SIGHT AND LIFE encourages
partnerships, the exchange of scientific
information and the creation of networks in the
fight against micronutrient deficiencies, also
known as Hidden Hunger. Together with
universities, intergovernmental and
non-governmental organizations, SIGHT AND LIFE is
involved in research and projects related to
pressing health issues caused by Hidden Hunger,
such as Nutritional Anemia and the Double Burden
of Malnutrition.

The Facts
Each dot represents5,000 deaths per year
Lancet 361(9376) 2226, 2003.
Over 10 million children do not reach the age of
5 years
  • Malnutrition kills 53 of all children under
five years of age, directly in synergy with
    infectious diseases (e.g. diarrhea, pneumonia,
    measles, malaria, HIV/AIDS)

11
The FactsObesity and Chronic Diseases are
crossing Borders
Chronic diseases account for 60 of all deaths
worldwide ( 36.7 million deaths/year)
80 of chronic disease deaths occure in low- and
middle-income countries
Source WHO
12
The Facts Vicious Cycle of Malnutrition and
Poverty
Income poverty
Low quality food intake (micronutrients)
Frequent infections
Physical labor
Frequent pregnancies
Increased nutrient loss utilization
Malnutrition
Low productivity from poor physical performance
Loss in productivity from poor cognitive
development schooling
Increased health care costs of ill health
13
The FactsMalnutrition
Malnutrition decides on lives
The United Nations Millennium Development Goals
aim to reduce child mortality by two-thirds by
2015. The World Bank cautions that malnutrition
may cost poor countries up to three percent of
their yearly gross domestic product. Better
nutrition improves peoples health and wellbeing,
and leads to economic growth.

The FactsMalnutrition
Micronutrient deficiencies divided they stand,
united they fall
Iodine deficiency in pregnancy results in 18
million babies a year born with mental
impairment. Maternal folate deficiency causes
0.25 million severe birth defects. Zinc
deficiency contributes to 5 of all child
deaths. Maternal iron deficiency anemia results
in more than 60,000 women a year dying during
pregancy and childbirth. It affects the mental
development of 40 of the developing worlds
children.

A Global Agenda to win the Nutrition Crisis
  • A common agenda must
  • Address the consequences of ignoring this crisis
Quality of life, lives lost (DALY), cost of
hidden hunger (reduced GNP), economic loss to
some sectors, return on investment for prevention
  • Close knowledge gaps for sustainable
    implementation of nutrition programs
  • Advocate evidence-based approaches to improve
    availability of high-quality, micronutrient-rich
and low-cost foods crucial to reducing stunting
and anemia among infants and young children (and
obesity among older children and adults), with
the potential to increase economic productivity
  • Integrate all sectors of society in developing
    and industrialized worlds

Fields of Work
Ensure a sustainable and significant improvement
in nutrition and health
SIGHT AND LIFE has been at the forefront in the
fight to improve vitamin A nutrition for over 20
years through Supplementation with vitamin A
capsules. For Home Fortification, individually
packed vitamin and mineral mixtures in powdered
form are used. The micronutrients are added
during food preparation at home or in school
feeding programs. SIGHT AND LIFE contributes to
Knowledge Creation and Dissemination by helping
to clarify the role of micronutrients in
promoting human health and wellbeing and ensuring
that this knowledge is widely available.
17
Fields of WorkSupplementation
WHO estimates that more than four million
children under the age of five years are affected
by night blindness, a severe form of vitamin A
deficiency (VAD) resulting in an increased
vulnerability for common childhood deseases like
measles, diarrhea, and malaria, leading to the
deaths of 1 million children each year.
SIGHT AND LIFE contributes to the fight against
VAD by donating around four million high-dose
vitamin A capsules per year.
Vitamin A supplementation rescues eyesight. This
girl was vitamin A deficient and thus at high
risk of becoming blind. Due to the severity of
the deficiency she has retained corneal scars.

Fields of WorkHome Fortification
19
Fields of WorkImproved Dietary Quality
Support of local projects
A womens group in Nepal holds a demonstration of
vitamin A rich food items.
Girls studying nutrition in Viet Nam. They
participated in a study on the efficacy of
fortified biscuits to combat micronutrient
deficiency, in collaboration with GRET.
Healthy eating communicated via radio. SIGHT AND
LIFE supported nutrition education by Helen
Keller International in Mali.
20
Fields of WorkKnowledge Creation and
Dissemination
SIGHT AND LIFE supports scientific research,
awards training and education grants, and
provides educational materials (such as books,
brochures and posters) in various languages to
address the needs of health workers, scientists,
representatives of governmental and
nongovernmental agencies and the media. In 1998,
the SIGHT AND LIFE Research Institute was
established at the Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore, USA. The institute conducts research
on micronutrients, and develops guidelines for
preventing nutritional deficiencies. Our flagship
publication, SIGHT AND LIFE Magazine, focuses on
increasing knowledge in micronutrient nutrition
and health, and widely disseminating relevant
information and scientific news. Other important
tools are our manuals on vitamin A deficiency
disorders and nutritional anemia as well as
educational documentaries. SIGHT AND LIFE also
holds workshops and conferences.

Santa Barbara, 12 March, 2008 Roundtable
Discussion Hidden Hunger Socioeconomic and
Scientific Challengesorganized by Klaus Kraemer
(SIGHT AND LIFE) and Lester Packer (University of
Southern California), addressing nearly 50
nutrition and economic thought leaders from 11
countries
  • Roundtable suggested a common agenda to address
    hidden hunger, including
  • Strategies that improve the availibility of
    micronutrient-rich and low cost supplementary
    foods
  • All sectors of society in the developing and
inustrialized worlds working together to address
    hidden hunger

Fields of Work Knowledge Creation and
Dissemination
Magazine, books, manuals, films

The Nutritional Anemia book is an important
contribution reminding us that in order to reduce
anemia, we need to recognize that no single
intervention will solve the problem, but that the
solution requires an integrated strategy of
complementary interventions. Kul C. Gautam,
Deputy Executive Director UNICEF
