Station 2 Poisons/Poison Control
What is a Poison?          Basically, almost any
chemical can be toxic it is the dose that makes
the poison.         The effect of the chemical
can also change depending on whether the subject
is human or animal, adult or child, healthy or
sick.         Responses to toxic or poisonous
chemicals the effects can include skin or eye
irritation allergic skin rashes or damage
inside the body, to the lungs (breathing), liver
(metabolism), heart (blood flow and heart beats),
kidney (urine), or other organs.
Natural chemicals, made by the earth, such as
lead, mercury, some species of plants, and animal
venoms, can be toxic. Man-made chemicals and
drugs can also be toxic. See Common Household
Poisons for more information about man-made
chemicals.         Natural chemicals have been
used as poisons historically. Socrates, the early
Greek philosopher, was executed by drinking a
plant poison, hemlock. Curare, which comes from
the bark of several different South American
trees, was used as an arrow poison. Some other
examples are on the next panels.
