Title: A Districts K8 Perspective:

A Districts K-8 Perspective
Avon Central School
2
Avon Central School
  • Avon Central School is the center of learning for
    approximately 1,100 students from Kindergarten
    through grade 12.
  • Located in northern Livingston County, the Avon
Central School district combines the benefits of
a tightly-knit rural community with proximity to
the technology and cultural opportunities of
Rochester, New York, just 20 miles to the north.
  • This past June 2007, we were recognized by the
State Education Department as one of the state's
"high performing/gap closing public schools. We
were designated because we met all applicable
state standards for English language arts and
math during the past two school years.
  • The school district has a high level
    of parent involvement.
  • Slightly over 20 of Avon students receive free
    and/or reduced lunch.

3
Why did we get involved with PBIS?
  • We were experiencing a large increase in the
number of ODR both in the classroom and out.
  • We recognized that behavior should be taught in a
    systematic manner just like academics.
  • Grant money provided training to select staff.
  • We realized the need to increase time on task.
Students that are able to focus on instruction
    learn!
  • Code of Conduct was more reactive than proactive
in modifying and correcting the behavior of our
    students.
