Title: A comparison of the Orca Whales and the Right Whales that inhabit the seas of Antarctica'

1
Antarctic Animals
  • A comparison of the Orca Whales and the Right
Whales that inhabit the seas of Antarctica.

2
Dorsal Fin
  • Orca Whale
  • The Orca has one dorsal fin on the top of its
body. The dorsal fins of the male and female
Orcas are different shapes and sizes. From 4ft to
    6ft.
  • Right Whale
  • The Right Whale does not have a dorsal fin.

3
Blowhole
  • The Orca Whale has one blowhole located on the
    top of the head.
  • The Right Whale has two blowholes.

4
Teeth
  • Orcas have 42-50 teeth. Their teeth are about
    7.5cm long and 2.5cm wide.
  • Right Whales do not have teeth, instead they have
tough hairs on their lips that filter feed small
    animals.

5
Skin
  • Orca Whales have smooth black skin with white
    patches all over its body.
  • Right Whales have black to dark brown skin with
    white to light brown patches.

6
Speed
  • Orcas are very fast swimmers that have the
movements and speed that allows them to catch
    fast moving prey.
  • Right Whales are very slow swimmers so they
simply scoop up small animals as they swim.

7
Size
  • The female Orca whale is smaller than the male.
Orcas size varies from 8 to 10 metres. Their
weight varies from 3.6 to 5.4 tonnes.
  • Like all Baleen whales, the female is bigger than
the male. Right Whale size varies from 14 to 16
metres and 8 to 10 tonnes.

8
Diet
  • The Orcas diet consists mainly of fish, squid,
birds, turtles, sharks, seals, and even baby
    whales.
  • Right Whales eat shrimp, krill, and plankton.

9
Pod
  • Orca Whales live and hunt in a pod of 6 to 60
    whales.
  • Right Whales form long term pods between mother
    and calf.

10
Population
  • The Orca Whales still have a strong population
    and are not endangered.
  • Due to hunting, Right Whales are very endangered
and only have a population of 500 to 1000.

11
Reproduction
  • Orcas do not have a set breeding time, they breed
all year round. The mating age is 3 to 16. Orcas
only have one calf a year.

Like Orcas, Right Whales have no set breeding
time. They have one calf every three years.
12
Life Expectancy
  • Male Orcas have a life expectancy of 50 to 60
years, females live for up to 90 years.

All genders of Right Whales have a life
expectancy of up to 60 years.
