Title: Superconductors Electromagnets

1
SuperconductorsElectromagnetsThe Tesla Coil
  • Group 4

2
Intro
  • Superconductors, Electromagnets and, Tesla
    Coils are devices that help
  • transfer energy
  • make life easier

3
What is a Superconductor?
  • Material in which resistance in certain metals,
alloys, and ceramics is essentially zero at
    certain low temperatures

4
Creator of Superconductors
  • Superconductivity was created by H.Kamerlingh
    Onnes in 1911

5
Uses of Superconductors
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Medical Studies of human heart, brain, and other
    physical science experiments
  • A completely superconducting prototype computer
  • High-powered magnets in medical imaging machines
    and particle accelerators

6
Advantages of Supercondutors
  • Small energy loses
  • more cost and power efficient
  • able to carry large currents for long periods of
time with small energy loses at heat
  • have carried currents for years with no
    recordable loses

7
Disadvantages of Superconductors
  • There is a restricted range for operating
    temperature
  • not a practical room temperature device
  • would have to be cooled with liquid Nitrogen
  • sensitive to a changing magnetic field
  • AC current does not work effectively with
    superconductors

8
What is an electromagnet?
  • A magnet consisting essentially of a coil of
insulated wire wrapped around a soft iron core
that is magnetized only when currents flow
    through the wire

9
Creator of Electromagnets
  • William Sturgeon created the first electromagnet
    in 1825

10
Uses of Electromagnets
  • To lift heavy masses of magnetic material
  • To attract movable magnetic parts of electric
    devices
  • In common electrical systems

11
Advantages of Electromagnets
  • Can carry much higher loads than permanent
    magnets
  • Strength is readily controllable
  • Can be switched off
  • Can be made to work with loads of temperatures up
    to 600 degrees Centigrade

12
Disadvantages of Electromagnets
  • Not water resistant or shock resistant or heat
    resistant
  • Power failure can cause damage/injures
  • Eventual burnout

13
Maglev Train
  • It is a form of transportation that suspends,
guides, and propels vehicles using the
    electromagnetic force
  • Its highest speed was 361 miles per hour

14
What is aTesla Coil?
  • A Telsa coil is a transformer(a device used to
transform electric energy) with an air core

15
Creator of the Tesla Coil
  • Nikola Tesla created the Tesla Coil in 1891

16
Uses of Tesla Coil
  • Used to conduct innovative experiments in
    electrical lighting, fluorescence,x-rays,high
    frequency alternating current phenomena,electrothe
rapy, and wireless power for electrical power
    transmission

17
Tesla Coil Lightning Car Protection
18
Conclusion
  • Superconductors, Electromagnets, and Tesla Coils
    have made life easier.
  • They improved the flow of electric currents.
