What is a BioSketch
  • It is an abbreviated CV (resume with
    publications) that highlights the key personnel
    or other significant contributors relevant
    experience/qualifications.
  • It is specific to the project proposed.
  • It must follow the guidelines of the sponsor.

  • Header personal information, education
  • Section A Positions Honors
  • Section B Selected Publications
  • Section C Related Research Support

Why not use the same BioSketch?
  • Understand that the last biosketch used, may
    not be the correct biosketch for this next
    grant
  • Bibliographies must be most relevant to the
    specific grant
  • Selected Research Support must be relevant to
    grant topic
  • Many PIs have multiple biosketches
  • Requests for biosketches should be reviewed with
    department sponsored research staff

Details from NIH Instructions
  • There is no form page for the biographical
    sketch.
  • You must include the biographical sketches of all
    KEY personnel and other significant contributors,
    including consultants.
  • Use the sample format on the "Biographical Sketch
    Format Page" (in handout).

  • Use NIH required font (Arial, Helvetica, Georgia
    or Palatino Linotype 11 points or larger).
  • Margin requirements strict guidelines
  • The Biographical Sketch may not exceed four
    pages. Sections A and B may not exceed two of the
    four-page limit.
  • Complete the educational block at the top of the
    format page, including eRA Commons User Name.

  • The NIH Biosketch may not exceed 4 pages
  • Header Sections A B 2 pages.
  • Section C 2 pages.

  • A. Positions and Honors
  • List in chronological order previous positions,
    concluding with your present position.
  • List any honors.
  • Include present membership on any Federal
    Government public advisory committee.

  • B. Selected Publications
  • Put in chronological order, oldest 1st
  • Peer-reviewed pubs only no reviews
  • Manuscripts in press
  • Do not include manuscripts submitted or in
    preparation.

  • Requested if NIH thinks the grant may be funded.
  • Includes ALL current research support (not just
    related support)
  • Includes ALL pending research support
  • Does not include any completed research support
  • Includes effort and direct cost
  • Addresses any scientific or budgetary overlap
