THE ENTRANCE EXPERIENCE Approaching the church
from the street, the industrial building is made
dramatic by a sky frame over the entrance door to
announce your arrival. The frame has colour
and a big sign reads R e a d i n g V i n
e y a r d You enter beneath this portal
frame which gives the building identity, setting
it apart from surrounding warehouses. Flags and
banners create a joyful, celebratory image and
help provide a warm, exciting welcome.

ENTERING THE BUILDING The main entrance doors
are glass, set in a glazed screen, through which
you can see colour, life and people enjoying
themselves. Entering the doors, the foyer has
drama it is a large double height welcome
space, overlooked by first floor rooms and
walkway. The aroma of coffee and freshly baked
bread greet you from the servery counter and
welcome desk to the left to the right people are
sat at cafe style tables. Beyond the cafe area,
through a glazed partition, can be seen the
two-storey M A D H O U S E . . .

THE MADHOUSE The Madhouse is a two-storey
childrens play area, accessed and visible from
the foyer. This means that parents can enjoy
their coffee, whilst watching their children
safely having a whale of a time! The Madhouse is
kitted out with padded climbing equipment,
slides, ball pools and other robust, colourful
and (most importantly), fun gear. Its on
two-storeys connected by a stair case (for adult
access) and by the play equipment for the
children.

THE AUDITORIUM From the cafe / foyer, the
auditorium is immediately visible through pairs
of wide glass doors. The space is dramatic,
again, double height with a seating gallery
across the back at first floor level. There are
some 300 seats in gently curving rows to follow
the curve of the large stage area to the right.
A sky frame over the stage gives it importance as
the focal point and creates eager anticipation
that this is an event space. It frames whatever
is happening on the platform and supports lights,
and audio -visual equipment. Behind the platform
is an area for projecting images. Images can
also be projected onto the curved walls either
side creating a joyful, exciting environment for
multi-media events.

THE CURVED WALKWAY Leading from the meeting
area and coffee bar, around the back of the
auditorium is a curved walkway, possibly with a
coloured glass screen into the auditorium. This
gives practical access to toilets and meeting
rooms, it is a space in its own right. Curved
passages give a sense of movement, and flow.
This will be a place to finish off ones
conversation as one walks around the back of the
auditorium, soaking up the expectation of the
lively worship that is about to start.

ANCILLARY ACCOMMODATION Tucked out of the way,
but conveniently right behind the auditorium are
toilets and two meeting rooms. The closeness
of these meeting rooms to the auditorium means
that small children could be led out to their own
Sunday events, without having to go too far from
their parents.

SERVERY RECEPTION The servery and reception
is the welcome into the church. From there is
the smell of coffee, warm bread , doughnuts, and
a smiling face to greet you. A church is not a
formal place, like an office or a hotel, where
procedures and systems are the first port of
call. Here there will be the warmth of greeting
that is symbolic of the Kingdom and in that
context you can pick up a leaflet, book a room
for a meeting/gathering/celebration, or find out
what the programme is for your favourite weekly
group.

FIRST FLOOR ROOMS There is a sense of
connection between the first floor and the ground
floor. Above the entrance is a gallery
overlooking the foyer, leading to the first floor
meeting rooms. These will be more private in
feel, but they are still very much part of the
overall building, easy to access, and flexible to
use.

SEATING GALLERY Balconies do something to
auditorium spaces. They give a three
dimensionality to the dynamics of the space and a
sense that the space is surrounded by people.
Young people love them, for their birds eye view.
One can be an observer and a participant at the
same time.

OFFICES Offices need to be close to the
entrance for easy access, but set apart for
privacy. Upstairs is the ideal place, looking
over the foyer. The striking curved wall, which
may be jettied over the kitchen and reception
office below, will form a defining bracket to the
foyer space, in counterpoint to the curved wall
of the madhouse on the other side. All this
will add drama to the entrance space and offer
the spice of spatial excitement and a warm
welcome.
