History Of Homestead
  • Homestead Works established on the Monongahela
    River in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
  • In March of 1881, the plant opened
  • Andrew Carnegie bought the Homestead Works in
    1883

Immigrants
  • Immigrants flocked to the Homestead
  • 1870-1880s the majority of immigrants were
    English, Welsh, Irish and German.
  • 1890-1920s the flux changed to Eastern
  • 1890-1930 the blacks from the South.

Paternalistic Town
  • U.S. Steel basically controlled the town.
  • Carnegie Library, Charles H. Schwab for the
    Manual Arts, Frick Park in 1905
  • In the 1980s, as in the 1880s, no matter where
    one walked, shopped or played, there were
    reminders of the boss and benefactor under whose
    initial vision the town had burst into successful
    industrial growth (Modell 41998).

  • 1933 56 percent of steelworkers were unemployed
    in the Works
  • Wages to half the amount of a decent living wage
  • A soup kitchen was established in Homestead

  • January 21, 1946
  • Largest strike in U.S. History
  • Workers demanded increased pay for increased
    productivity

The Decline of Steel in Homestead
  • 1960s
  • Workers were steeling from the company
  • Were sleeping on the job
  • Were playing golf instead of going to work

Shutting down Homestead Works
  • Mill shut down in phases
  • Final shutting of the gates was on July 25, 1986

Homestead in 2003
  • labeled as a distressed community
  • main business district - 8th Avenue - is
    dilapidated and awaiting revival
  • population is down to 3,569 as of the 2000 census

    raise more money (April 2003)

  • Homestead Works was located on a plot of that is
    part of three different boroughs - Homestead,
    West Homestead, and Munhall.
