Principles of Design

• The Principles are concepts used to organize or
  arrange the structural elements of design. The
  way in which these principles are applied affects
  the expressive content, or the message of the
  work.

• Relating the design elements to the idea being
  expressed in a painting reinforces the principle
  of unity.
• Can be seen in unity of line, form, pattern,
  color, shape, and variety.

• Balance in design is similar to balance in
  physics.

Rhythm

• Rhythm can be described as timed movement
  through space an easy, connected path along
  which the eye follows a regular arrangement of
  motifs.
• Linear, repetition, alternation, graduation.

• Emphasis is also referred to as point of focus,
  or interruption.
• Contrast, color, texture, shape, size and scale.

Proportion and Scale

• Proportion refers to the relative size of the
  various elements in a design.
• Scale refers to the relative size of an object
  to a unit of measurement.
