  • Product Overview
  • Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is a wastewater
    treatment solution, which combines membrane
    ultrafiltration (selectively semi - permeable
    membrane) and activated sludge process
    (biological process).
  • MBR is used for critical solid liquid waste
    separation process in secondary and tertiary
    stages of wastewater treatment, thereby
    maximizing the treated water quality.
  • MBR Components Bar screen, oil and grease trap,
    equalization tank, sewage feed pumps, fine
    screen, anoxic tank, bioreactor with diffusers,
    membrane tank with membrane modules, membrane
    scouring blowers, permeate pumps, back wash
    pumps, membrane cleaning system, process air
    blowers, disinfection system, return activated
    sludge pump, sludge dewatering system.
  • MBR can be broadly divided into three types,
    namely,
  • Hollow Fiber These fibers are oriented in
    vertical direction with aerators that are
    combined with module or frame. Hollow fibers are
    exclusively used for immersed MBR for both
    industrial and municipal sectors.
  • Flat Sheet These membrane modules are planar in
    configuration (mainly rectangular), which are
    designed to rotate.
  • Multi-Tubular Multi-tubular are multichannel
    MBR, which are used as side stream MBR.

2025, membrane bioreactor market in India is
projected to grow at a CAGR of over 11 over the
next five years and cross 100 million, owing to
growing demand for safe and clean drinking water
across the country. Increasing installation of
Centralized Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and
Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), in addition to
rising need to upgrade the wastewater treatment
systems, as most of the sewerage pipelines have
not undergone modernization, is expected to fuel
the membrane bioreactor market during forecast
period. Ministry of Environment in India has
imposed stringent rules and policies, as well as
tightened environmental standards for wastewater
treatment. Industries have been instructed to
fulfill the four parameters determining the water
quality namely pH value, which measures the level
of acidity, Bio-Chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD),
Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Faecal Coliform
(FC) in the treated wastewater. The new rules are
applicable to all plants scheduled for
commissioning after June 2019, while existing
plants are required to comply with new
regulations within five years. As a result,
demand for wastewater treatment plants and
membrane bioreactors is anticipated to grow at a
robust pace in the country during the forecast
period. According to a National Institute of
Hydrology report, accessible per capita water in
India is expected to decline from 938 cubic
meters in 2010 to 814 cubic meters by 2025. On an
average, one person in India uses 150-200 liters
of water per day, out of which approximately
60-65 liters of water is wasted every day.
Moreover, the UN has ranked India 120th among 122
countries for quality of water, estimating that
70 of the supply is contaminated, with high
arsenic levels and other contaminants, which is
anticipated to fuel the market for membrane
bioreactors in the country over the next five
years. In terms of application segments,
municipal segment accounted for more than 50
share in 2019. Initiatives such as cleaning of
river water and demand for safe domestic drinking
water fall under the municipal sector, which are
anticipated to result in opportunities for MBR
companies to develop technologically advanced
treatment systems such as MBRs in order to meet
stringent discharge standards as well as enable
more reuse and recycling of wastewater in
India. Over the last few years, growth has been
witnessed majorly for hollow fiber type MBRs, as

effluent quality, high volumetric load and cost
effectiveness, over other types of membranes used
in MBRs. Thus, hollow fiber type MBRs are
