Title: Types of photos

Types of photos

News Photos
  • -Show what really happened. An event, a person,
or a moment of conflict/tragedy/joy, etc.
  • -Require good timing. News is all about time, and
the right photo means you took it at the right
moment. You should take a LOT of photos (1 roll
    for every 1 used).
  • -Require the photog to understand the
accompanying story. The photo should match the
    angle of the story.

150 women thundered down Amsterdam's most famed
fashion street in stiletto heels, running for a
euro 10,000 (US15,000) prize, shopping spree,
Thursday March 6, 2008. The annual race on the
P.C. Hooft street called the 'Stiletto Run' is
only three years old but has quickly grown in
popularity and spawned imitation races in
Germany, Sweden, Poland and Russia. (AP

Feature Photos
  • -Present information on a timely subject, but are
not accompanied by a story (do not confuse these
with photos that accompany feature stories).
  • -May use technical effects unusual composition
(but photogs shouldnt set up a shot or tell
    subjects what to do).

5
Feature Photos
  • -Usually run on the front page or on the front of
a section, and they do not need an accompanying
story (though they do have a longer caption).
  • -Some examples its snowing in the desert Mrs.
Kimzins class is having a fiesta.

6
A feature photo, like this one from the Modesto
Bee, highlights something that may not merit a
full front page story.
7
Photo Sequence
  • -A series of photos of the same subject the
subject moves, but the camera does not. Examples
a flower opening, a speaker talking.

Photo Essay
  • -Sometimes, a photo tells the story better than
words. The photo essay is when a newspaper
publishes a series of photos that represent a
particular event or issue. These photos have an
extended caption or an intro, but the photos
themselves tell the story. Some subjects (like a
school dance) are dull to report about, but can
    make for interesting photos.
