Course Description
  • This course is designed for those planning to
    enter college and/or consistently show an ability
    to pursue above-average scholastic work.

  • Literature study is ambitious and based upon the
    classics.
  • Study focuses on the elements of literature as
    well as the techniques of writing through various
    genres such as
  • Short stories
  • Poetry
  • Epic
  • Drama
  • Novels

Portfolio Development
  • Each student is required to develop a working
    portfolio which will be added to the building
    show portfolio

General Objectives
  • A. To enable the student to effectively
    communicate his ideas.
  • B. To provide exposure to the various literary
    genres.
  • C. To acquaint the student with literary
    terminology.
  • D. To arm students with skills to analyze given
    works.
  • E. To promote critical thinking
  • F. To broaden reading and speaking vocabulary.
  • G. To write with clarity and correctness.

  • H. To transfer knowledge of mythology to the
    epic poem.
  • I. To transfer knowledge of the epic poem to
    Shakespearean writing.
  • J. To read and comprehend Shakespearean tragedy.
  • K. To reinforce correct grammar usage.

  • L. To promote understanding of the writing
    process through the domains of focus, content,
    organization, style and conventions.
  • M. To arm student with the skills necessary to
    find success on PSSA materials.

Organization
  • Class will meet five periods per week for a full
    week.
  • One credit will be issued upon successful
    completion of this course.

Make-up Policy
  • It is the students responsibility to make up any
    class work when absent.
  • If you knew about an assignment before you were
    absent, it is due on the date of your return.
    You must submit it at this time.

  • If attending a field trip on a date an assignment
    is due, you must submit the assignment BEFORE
    departure for the field trip
  • Failure to make up missed work or turn in
    assignments by their due date will result in a
    zero for that assignment.

Project Writing Procedure
  • All papers must display the MLA format.
  • Papers should be typed, double spaced, with one
    inch margins.
  • Papers will be graded using the Pennsylvania
    Domain Scoring Guide.

Evaluation
  • Techniques
  • The students knowledge and understanding of the
    reading material is measured by objective
    examinations and written pieces.
  • Unit vocabulary work and tests will be
    administered.

  • Projects, oral presentations and other written
    assignments may be assigned and accepted on the
    due date.
  • A midterm and final will be administered as per
    school policy.
  • Writings for portfolio use will be maintained.
  • Independent Reading one book per quarter with
    journal entries and project/test.

  • Grading scale is based upon the point system and
    determined by percentages as per school policy.
  • A notebook/binder of class material and progress
    complete with assignments must be maintained and
    submitted for grade.

Notebook/Binder Maintenance
  • Notebook/Binder maintenance is necessary. Keep
    careful notes and keep all materials and handouts
    up-to-date. The notebook/binder must be
    submitted each nine week period for a grade.

  • The binder will be divided into the following
  • four areas
  • Independent Reading Log/Journal
  • Quickwrite journal notes with dates
  • Genre section materials
  • Vocabulary unit words with definitions for review

  • BE ON TIME.
  • BE PREPARED WITH PROPER MATERIALS, ASSIGNMENTS,
    AND/OR PROJECTS.
