  • Basic procedures for creating content in
    Lectopia units and recording schedules
  • Lectopia core components recording settings,
    compression settings, delivery settings, delivery
    groups
  • Lectopia Bb plugin
  • Adding Lectopia content to iTunesU
  • Miscellaneous items
  • Demo scheduled recording
  • Demo manual recording
  • QA

3
Lectopia Support _at_ OIT
  • DMS partners with 3 other OIT units to provide
    Lectopia support for DukeCapture
  • OIT Collaborative Systems
  • OIT CDSS (Centralized Desktop and Server Support)
  • OIT Help Desk

4
Digital Media Solutions
  • DMS provides management for the overall project
    and central admin for accounts
  • Works closely with site admins to make sure
youre getting what you need from the system
  • DMS works with UWA on troubleshooting,
    customization feature enhancements
  • We are paying 10,000/ yr for support
  • Examplescustom auth module, high quality VGA,
    RealMedia
  • Currently no central licensing costs, which means
youre essentially just paying for the machine
    plus support

5
OIT Collaborative Systems
  • Provides administration for back-end systems
  • Central Lectopia server
  • Bank of processors
  • ftp and delivery servers
  • Various supporting applications (MySQL, Lasso,
    Cleaner, Shibboleth, etc.)
  • Provides hardware and software installation,
    upgrades, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Provides administration for OIT streaming servers
used to deliver Lectopia content. Lectopia
content is published to afs directories
    associated with DukeStream--/afs/acpub.duke.edu/pr
    oject/media/ilecture

6
OIT CDSS (Centralized Desktop and Server
Support)
  • Works with DMS to create functional builds for
    Lectopia digitisers.
  • CDSS orders new units and installs the builds
  • CDSS delivers new digitisers and registers them
    on the network
  • CDSS maintains the units for a 3-year support
period, which includes software patches and
updates, replacement of hardware covered under
warranty (3 years for the computer and associated
hardware, and 1 year for capture cards)
  • CDSS assists DMS with triage for problems with
    the digitisers

7
OIT Help Desk
  • Provide assistance routing, tracking triage for
    support requests related to Lectopia
  • Support issues need to be initiated with a call
    to the Help Desk
  • If the person initiating the call is a Lectopia
user, that support request will be routed to the
Site Administrator associated with the unit/s
    involved
  • If the person initiating the call is a site
administrator, based on input provided the call
will be routed to DMS or to CDSS.

8
New Venue Setup
  • CDSS orders the units, installs a disk image
developed in collaboration with DMS, delivers
the units, and works with customers to enable
    network access for the system.
  • Before we come out we need to obtain a fixed ip
address. The systems come with a fixed address
in place, but for networks not managed centrally
through OIT, we will need to involve your
    network administrator.
  • We deliver the box to you and walk you through
the set-up of your venue in the Lectopia admin
    interface.

9
Getting Started
  • Creating a new unit
  • Units are containers for Lectopia recordings
  • Creating a recording schedule
  • Recording schedules are the mechanism for
creating recordings and associating them with
    units

10
Creating a New Unit
  • Units can correspond to an official course and
can be named and scheduled accordingly. Or they
can designate a group of recordings you define,
such as a guest speaker series, or your own
    personal tests.

11
Creating a New Unit
12
Creating a New Unit
  • We will need for you to take out a remedy ticket
requesting a new afs volume for each unit before
    recording lectures. Otherwise the lectures
will be archived to the top level ilecture
directory in afs. To create a volume we will
simply need the unit name(s) and unit code(s) of
    your unit(s).
  • We need a couple of days of lead time to set up
    new units
  • Units where possible need to be set up on a
    semester-by-semester basis to keep storage
    manageable

13
Creating a Recording Schedule
  • Once youve set up a unit, the next step is to
    create a recording schedule.
  • You can schedule a single recording or up to a
    years worth of classes.
  • You can also set up a digitiser to function in
manual mode. When you do this, the digitizer
essentially creates a recording schedule on the
    fly for a single recording.

14
Creating a Recording Schedule
15
Lectopia Core Components
  • Lectopia handles the capture, processing, and
delivery of content in the system via
  • Recording settings
  • Compression settings
  • Delivery settings
  • Delivery groups

16
Recording Settings
  • These are basic capture settings used on the
    digitizer machine itself.
  • Raw files are captured, and then immediately
uploaded via sftp to a remote bank of processors
    for compression
  • DMS enters recording settings into the system. We
will work with site admins to develop custom
    recording settings if needed.

17
Recording Settings
18
Compression Settings
  • These are Cleaner settings files (.xml) that
    dictate
  • Media type (Quicktime, .mp3, .mp4, .rm, .wmv,
    etc.)
  • Data rate bit depth
  • Frame rate
  • Movie pixel dimensions
  • Again, DMS creates these, and will work with you
to customize these according to your needs

19
Compression Settings
20
Delivery Settings
  • A Delivery Setting is a compression setting plus
    info about
  • Where to put the file
  • How to deliver the file
  • How to package the file

21
Delivery Settings
22
Delivery Groups
  • Delivery groups are collections of delivery
settings. I.e., you can turn a single lecture
into a series files, each fine-tuned for a
    different audience.

Integration w/ iTunesU
To send content to iTunesU you need to
  • Connect with DDI staff to set up a new unit with
    iTunes_at_Duke for your content
  • Specify a delivery setting for which iTunes Music
    Store Cupertino is the server

32

34
Issues of Note
  • Selecting digitizer inputs
  • Digitiser Virus protection issues

35
Selecting digitiser inputs
  • Selecting inputs in Digitiser Video Source
    Window
  • Scenario 1
  • A single VGA capture card installed
  • gtVideo Device 1 must be the Vision RGB Pro card
  • Scenario 2
  • A single composite video capture card installed
  • gt Video Device 1 must be the composite video
    capture card
  • Scenario 3
  • Two video capture cards
  • A composite video capture card installed
  • A VGA capture card installed
  • gt Video Device 1 must be the composite video
    capture card
  • gt Video Device 2 must be the Vision RGB Pro card

36
Virus protection issue
  • Digitizers dont currently have virus protection
    installed. This is because
  • a) the developers of Lectopia recommend that it
not be included because of performance issues
  • b) the systems are locked down, and no viruses
should be introduced to the system - unless the
system is already compromised in which case, the
    viruses are moot.
  • This is one reason we want systems to be locked
    down
  • We will be researching the addition of virus
    protection to future digitiser builds
