Why this song?
Horatio Spafford was a very wealthy man in the
mid 1800s. A man with vast holding in real
estate. They were wiped out by disaster prior to
the Chicago Fire of 1871. Not too long before
that he had just experienced the death of his son
in 1872. Desiring a rest he planed a trip to
Europe for his wife, four daughters and himself
in 1873. Due to unexpected business he had to
remain in Chicago. He sent his wife and daughter
ahead aboard the S.S. Ville Du Havre. On November
22 the ship was struck by another ship the
Lochearn, an English vessel and sank in only 12
minutes. The survivors landed a few days later at
Cardiff, Wales.

Genesis. 27 And the LORD God formed man of the
dust of the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life and man became a
living being.

Why is the soul so important?
Christ taught about its value
Matthew. 1626 "For what profit is it to a man
if he gains the whole world, and loses his own
soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his
soul?
It cannot be destroyed
Matthew. 1028 "And do not fear those who kill
the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather
fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and
body in hell.
The soul will live on forever
Ecclesiastes. 127 Then the dust will return to
the earth as it was, And the spirit will return
to God who gave it.

The Bible teaches its value
The scriptures teach us to prepare to meet God.
Amos 412 "Therefore thus will I do to you, O
Israel Because I will do this to you, Prepare to
meet your God, O Israel!"
Hebrews. 411-12 For the word of God is living
and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged

the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

The Soul Will Live Forever and needs to be saved
Matthew. 1028 "And do not fear those who kill
the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather
fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and
body in hell.
The value of life and the brevity of life demands
that we take immediate action
Matthew. 1626 "For what profit is it to a man
if he gains the whole world, and loses his own
soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his
soul?
James. 413-15 Come now, you who say, "Today or
tomorrow we will go to such and such a city,
spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a
profit" 14 whereas you do not know what will
happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is
even a vapor that appears for a little time and
then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say,
"If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or
that."

There is life beyond the grave!
Luke. 1622-23 "So it was that the beggar died,
and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom.
The rich man also died and was buried. 23 "And
being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes
and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his
bosom.
There is a judgment that the soul will face!
2 Corinthians. 510 For we must all appear
before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one
may receive the things done in the body,
according to what he has done, whether good or
bad.
Philippians. 29-11 Therefore God also has
highly exalted Him and given Him the name which
is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of
those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11
and that every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

In view of this we must busy ourselves in doing
what James tells us
James 121-25 Therefore lay aside all filthiness
and overflow of wickedness, and receive with
meekness the implanted word, which is able to
save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and
not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if
anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he
is like a man observing his natural face in a
mirror 24 for he observes himself, goes away,
and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of
liberty and continues in it, and is not a
forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one
will be blessed in what he does.
Our soul is purified through obeying the truth
1 Pet. 122-23 Since you have purified your
souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in
sincere love of the brethren, love one another
fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born
again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible,
through the word of God which lives and abides
forever,

Christ died so the soul might be saved
Hebrews. 58-9 though He was a Son, yet He
learned obedience by the things which He
suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became
the author of eternal salvation to all who obey
Him,
Romans 116-17 For I am not ashamed of the
gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to
salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew
first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the
righteousness of God is revealed from faith to
faith as it is written, "The just shall live by
faith."
1 Corinthians. 151-4 Moreover, brethren, I
declare to you the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received and in which you
stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold
fast that word which I preached to you unless
you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you
first of all that which I also received that
Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He
rose again the third day according to the
Scriptures,

The Soul Will Exist Somewhere In Eternity
It is possible that your soul can to go to Hell!
Ezekiel. 1820 "The soul who sins shall die.
2 Thessalonians. 17-9 ... when the Lord Jesus
is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8
in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do
not know God, and on those who do not obey the
gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be
punished with everlasting destruction from the
presence of the Lord and from the glory of His
power,
Hell is a place for the evil and many will go
there
Matthew. 713-14 "Enter by the narrow gate for
wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads
to destruction, and there are many who go in by
it. 14 "Because narrow is the gate and difficult
is the way which leads to life, and there are few
who find it.

'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven,
but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22 "Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord,
have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out
demons in Your name, and done many wonders in
Your name?' 23 "And then I will declare to them,
'I never knew you depart from Me, you who
practice lawlessness!'
Thank God it is possible for the soul to go to
Heaven!!
John. 316-17 "For God so loved the world that
He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have
everlasting life. 17 "For God did not send His
Son into the world to condemn the world, but that
the world through Him might be saved.

Heaven should be everyone's goal
2 Corinthians. 510-11 For we must all appear
before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one
may receive the things done in the body,
according to what he has done, whether good or
bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord,
we persuade men but we are well known to God,
and I also trust are well known in your
consciences.
Hebrews. 1031 It is a fearful thing to fall
into the hands of the living God.
