Alcohol Use
  • Recent frequency of drinking excludes sips
  • Current (past month) use - At least one drink in
    the past 30 days (includes binge and heavy
    use).Binge use - Five or more drinks on the
    same occasion (i.e., at the same time or within a
    couple of hours of each other) at least once in
    the past 30 days (includes heavy use).Heavy use
    - Five or more drinks on the same occasion on at
    least 5 different days in the past 30 days.

Association with Illicit Drug use and Tobacco
  • Among the 16.7 million heavy drinkers aged 12 or
    older,
  • 32.2 percent were current illicit drug users.
  • Persons who did not use alcohol in the past month
    were less likely to have used illicit drugs in
    the past month
  • Drinking levels also were associated with tobacco
    use.
  • 61.2 of heavy drinkers smoked cigarettes in the
    past month
  • 21.1of non-binge current drinkers were current
    smokers
  • 16.3 who did not drink alcohol in the past
    month were current smokers.
  • Smokeless tobacco and cigar use also were more
    prevalent among heavy drinkers than among
    non-binge drinkers and nondrinkers.

Prescription Drug Abuse
  • NSDUH the use of a drug that was not prescribed
    for user or a drug taken only for the experience
    of feeling that it caused.
  • Does not include over the counter medications or
    medications that were prescribed
  • Other definitions include taking more than
    prescribed, more often than prescribed, use by a
    modality other than oral ie IV or intranasal,
    doctor shopping (Clinics, ER), diversion.
