Abstract During his lifetime James Pinkerton
Campbell (1865-1935) was a committed amateur and
professional photographer whose career included
work as a landscape photographer official
Commonwealth Government photographer and
cinematographer First World War photographer
and industrial photographer. It is my
contention that Campbell made a significant
contribution to Australian photography in these
areas, a contribution that has not been
recognised. In writing a biography of JP
Campbell I will attempt to analyse and illuminate
his life and work in the context of important
Australian events and developments. My research
will focus on Campbells landscape photography,
his use of photography to promote land settlement
in Australia before the First World War, his
photographic record of Gallipoli, his period as
an official war photographer in the Middle East,
and his documentation of Yallourn in its
formative years.
