An Older Wiser Sheffield
  • 1 in 3 Sheffield Residents are over the age of 50
  • 1 in 6 over the age of 65
  • Over the next 20 years this pattern of an
    expanding population is set to increase

What do we mean by an older person?
  • Sport England over 45s
  • BHF bigger focus on over 45s drop off
  • NSF entering old age, transitional and frailer
  • Its ability not age that determines
    participation!

What are the issues?
  • People experience the impacts of ageing at
    different points in their life and respond
    differently to them.
  • Diversity of provision is key!
  • Focus on maintaining independence for everyday
    tasks, social opportunities.
  • This age group represent the most sedentary!

What have we done so far?
  • City on the Move Strategy
  • Keeping Active, Staying Healthy and Enjoying Life
    Strategy
  • Sub Group action plan
  • Have 40 sessions per week for over 50s
    frailer older people
  • Identified CIF funding to increase capacity to
    take strategy forward focus will be on people
    Entering Old Age and the transitional phase
    (people at risk of becoming independent) (NSF)

    within AS - 40 sessions/week for
    frailer/transitional OP

The Care Home Olympics!

Care Home Olympics
  • Sheffield's first Care Home Olympics was ran in
    June, 2008.
  • Event attracted 200 people
  • 120 were competitors
  • 20 Care Homes from across the city took part
  • Very fun and enjoyable day!!
  • Following success of last years we are running
    this as a yearly event!
  • The event was good for the soul and good for
    the mind It made me feel as if I am still in
    the world

Falls PreventionWork
  • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over
  • the age of 65 years fall each year
  • 4 Falls sessions per week
  • Staff are OTAGO trained
  • Attend Standard 6
  • Falls Sub group Developed the Falls Care
    Pathway (Partnership work between NHS Sheffield
    and Activity Sheffield)

CIF the basics
  • Why a new project?
  • 227k from Sport England over 3 years
  • Activity Sheffield will manage the project
  • Will fund a development officer, sports
    development officer and delivery worker
  • Aim
  • To increase activity levels within the over 50s
  • whilst also developing the capacity of this age
  • group to deliver sport and activity.

How?
  • Deliver a range of activities
  • Develop community/facility based multi activity
    and sports specific clubs
  • Work with existing clubs in City via NGBs
  • Develop Active Friends
  • Develop the older peoples physical activity sub
    group who will provide project steer

  • Consultation with older people expert elders,
    expert patients, 50 (links being explored)
  • Provision/promotion of training opportunities

  • Aiming to use the information collated from
    todays workshop to develop a marketing campaign
    to target Over 50s and develop innovative
    activities to attract the more active Over 50s
  • Each workshop will last 12 minutes
