  • Both terms are often used

What is authority?
  • Right to control and use resources
  • Right to set up or change programs
  • Right to set, change, and/or enforce policy or
    regulations

What is power?
  • Power is being able to enforce or have control
    over someone.
  • You can have authority without power. However,
    you can not have power without at least some
    authority over your group.
  • Power comes from positions and from people who
    have a following.
  • Power is not delegated!

What are ethics?
  • Ethics are based on the morals, mores and
    requirements of the organization.
  • On the other hand, morals, mores, and traditions
    sometimes determine the ethics of an
    organization.
  • Code of Ethics Serve as a guide for employees.
    A code of ethics allows employees know the
    standards and stated objectives of the
    organization.

  • Knowledge of the organization, cutbacks,
    equipment, priorities etc.
  • Have the power to determine when employees
    receive knowledge.
  • Budget all of money, salary, purchase of
    equipment, funds, etc.
  • Task Assignments Who and what people do in the
    organization.
  • Defense Power to carry what others think to
    those higher than they are in the organization.

  • - Can be confusing because employees sometimes
    do not know how to make decisions.
  • - On the other hand, participatory leaders
    allows employees to be creative and to pursue
    their own initiatives.

  • Top Down Leadership Style
  • - Have the initial and final say.
  • - Sometimes rules with an iron fist.
  • - Little team-based decision making allowed.
  • - Sometimes listen, but still make final
    decisions.
  • - Expedient and gets thing done.
