Discussion Issues
  • Name of Journal
  • Suggested ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems and
    Applications Journal
  • Response from Springer Marketing does not
    recommend changing names. MMSJ reached
    recognition and acceptance
  • Multimedia Applications and Tools (see
    SpringerKluwer Issue later)
  • Editors Tenure Time
  • 3 years or 6 years change of EB or based on
changes in topics or when EiC changes
    suggestions are welcome
  • We need a procedure for EB selection (EiC selects
new EB, few selected EB members select, )

9
Discussion Issues
  • Publishing Process
  • Need to speed up the author proof reading process
(part of the Springer publishing time)
  • Action Peter Strasser and EiC work together to
push authors to respond (policy if authors do
not respond within 2-3 weeks when contacted by
Springer, authors are moved to a much later
    issue)
  • Need to speed up the Springer publishing process
(time between decision about accepted papers and
    publishing the journal 3-6 months)
  • Action EiC works with Springer/Peter Strasser
and the publishing process is now down to 3
    months
  • Web site for MMSJ
  • http//cairo.cs.uiuc.edu/mmsj.html
  • Springer provides also updated web site in good
    shape
  • Springer web site provides all accepted papers
    before they are published

10
Discussion Issues
  • Special Issues in MMSJ
  • Guest editor(s) who would do a special issue on
    10 years of ACM Multimedia?
  • Best papers of ACM Multimedia 2003 guest
    editors of individual tracks ?
  • Review Process
  • Goal to limit time for major revisions 3 months
  • Goal to limit time for minor revisions 1 month
  • Goal to speed up the first review response time
    to 2-3 months

11
Discussion Issues
  • Springer Digital Library
  • Springer will provide electronic access to
electronic MMSJ articles for paying ACM
individual subscribers who subscribe to paper
    copies of MMSJ.
  • Goal to make electronic access of MMSJ available
    to SIGMM members

12
SpringerKluwer Clarification
  • Springer will not be bought by Kluwer !!
  • History
  • Springer was owned in recent years by Bertelsmann
    and formed BertelsmannSpringer as Bertelsmanns
    scientific publishing arm
  • In 2002 and early 2003 Bertelsmann had losses and
sold parts of their activities In May 2002
Bertelsmann announced that they want to sell
    BertelsmannSpringer
  • Also in 2002 Wolters Kluwer had sold Kluwer
Academic Publishers - KAP (running WKs natural
    sciences and economics publishing) to
    London-based investment companies Cinven and
Candover (WK retained medical and legal
    publishing)
  • BertelsmannSpringer was bought Cinven and
    Candover
  • Summary Springer and KAP share the same owner
  • Cinven and Candover will bring together the
publishing activities of KAP and Springer and
will continue the merged company under the name
    SPRINGER
  • BertelsmannSpringer is about five times as big as
KAP, so Springer is taking over Kluwer and not
    vice versa
  • Merger of KAP and present Springer will be
    started by February 2004
