Lessons Learned from CST 04
Issue 1 Task Force Augmentation Discussion
The site was initially provided an ADA platoon,
augmented with chemical soldiers. Wnen the TF
changed, we received an 81-mm mortar platoon.
11C soldiers proved lacking in the ability to
effectively instruct squad battle drills.
Despite recent combat experience, junior leaders
proved to be unsure of themselves and outside
their comfort zone when discussing and
instructing the leadership and maneuver of a
rifle squad. In addition, ad hoc squads composed
of mortarmen required a significant amount of
training and practice to execute the
demonstration. Recommendation An infantry
rifle platoon, with 11B junior leaders, is the
most effective TF augmentation. Issue 2
Grenades Discussion Employing the hand grenade
as part of training has proven to be a
distraction over the past two summer iterations.
It does not fit well into the squad attack (vice
training for knock out a bunker), and therefore
ultimately results in a forced pause during the
assault while a soldier attempts to toss the
grenade from a range outside the burst radius. A
more effective tool to train is proper use of the
smoke grenade for obscuration. Recommendation
Frag grenades are no longer issued, and one smoke
grenade is provided to the squad instead. Issue
3 5th Day Final Competition Discussion Last
year the committee did not run a 5th day
competition between the best squads of each
company. A final competition presents several
problems it is inherently tactically unsound,
as we do not fight squad on squad, since we
cannot gain fire superiority it is an added day
for the cadets, and motivation, especially from
cadre, is lacking it is an added day for the
task force, and inevitably interferes with
redeployment plans (as evidenced in
2003). Recommendation Cadre determine the best
squad in each company based on scoring the
company with the highest of these scores is
awarded the streamer if there is a tie, a
comparison of all squad scores breaks it.

fire team move up to the objective and ACE
report) before it can retrieve the flag.
