ABOUT PIGNON
  • Located on the Central Plateau
  • Village of 30,000 habitants
  • Average income less than 400/year
  • Substantial and growing market
  • Ample groundwater supply

LIFE IN PIGNON
  • Little or no electricity, no running water
  • Everyone either walks or uses donkeys to carry
    burdens
  • Women do laundry in the river or sell goods in
    local markets
  • Kids are in charge of getting the water and take
    care of their younger brothers and sisters
  • Men do agricultural work and hard labor

PURPOSE OF THE TRIP
  • Travel to Haiti to further assess the needs of
    the population
  • Work with Haiti Outreach to initiate a
    collaborative design project that incorporates
    sustainable solutions
  • Select feasible projects and involve interested
    IIT students
  • Create a long term partnership between IIT, the
    Rotary, Haiti Outreach and local engineering
    companies

HIGH SCHOOL IN PIGNONCURRENT SITUATION
  • 6 classrooms (grade 6 to 12)
  • About 70 students/classroom
  • 4 latrines
  • No running water, no electricity
  • HO recently built new roofs and produced benches

  • Build a multi-purpose assembly room

MAPPING OF PIGNON AND VICINITYCURRENT SITUATION
  • Pignon does not have topographic and geological
    documentation
  • Without a detailed map, it is impossible to
    design an efficient water distribution system
  • A database would be very useful to the community
    for planning and development

  • Geographic Information System (GIS) technology
    will be used to develop a formal map and a layout
    of the town
  • Google earth will also be used to elaborate the
    map
  • Partnership with American civil engineering
    companies will be created
  • Surveys will be done during the January trip
  • An IIT Interprofessionnal Project has been
    created with 8 students involved

SITUATION
  • A system already exists but maintenance is poor
  • Management of the system is inefficient
  • System uses ram pumps (no energy required)
  • Abundant water resources (700 gpm)
  • The system needs to be redesigned

WATER DISTRIBUTION SYTEM IN PIGNONPROJECT
  • A study is being conducted to improve the
    management of the system
  • The goal is to provide descent access to clean
    water to 20,000 people
  • Solar panels may be used to run electrical pumps
  • Storage capacity will be increased
  • Disinfection process will be implemented
  • Five IIT students are working on this project

INVOLVMENT OF IIT STUDENTS
  • 25 students involved in 3 projects
  • Every major are represented
  • 3 students organization are participating
  • (EWB, WEF ATM)
  • First HAITI Outreach student chapter created to
    manage the overall project in Haiti
  • www.iit.edu/haiti is under construction
  • A group of 10 IIT students is going on a trip in
    Pignon from January 10th to January 16th 2006
  • Students are starting a fundraising campaign to
    finance the projects
