3
Taxonomy A Definition
  • What do we mean by Taxonomy1?
  • Taxonomy (from Greek taxis meaning arrangement or
division and nomos meaning law) is the science of
    classification according to a pre-determined
system, with the resulting catalog used to
provide a conceptual framework for discussion,
    analysis, or information retrieval
  • What makes a good Taxonomy?
  • Separates elements of a group into subgroups that
are mutually exclusive, unambiguous, and taken
    together, include all possibilities
  • Should be simple, easy to remember, and easy to
    use

Taxonomies and UDDI
  • UDDI Taxonomies
  • Are the classification lists or systems used for
    the published services
  • Services may belong to many taxonomies
  • By default the UDDI registry comes with 60
    taxonomies
  • Dun Bradstreet (DB) Data Universal Numbering
    System (DUNS)
  • Universal Standard Product and Service
    Classification (Product Taxonomy)
  • Should reflect the service consumers agenda
  • May need different taxonomies for different user
    groups
  • Internal users may find services using known
    lines of service
  • Public or Partner users may need a more generic
    nomenclature

5
Taxonomies and UDDI (Contd)
  • EPA UDDI Taxonomies should be EPA-centric
  • Two classification schemes are being proposed
  • EPA Organizational Structure
  • Expert EPA users fully familiar with who provides
    what services
  • Environmental Interests
  • Geared toward non-expert users
  • Based upon the EPAs Terminology Reference System
    (TRS)
  • TRS has been used to generate a keyword list to
support the searching capabilities of the
Environmental Data Registry (EDR) and can provide
keyword generation capabilities for other Agency
    Web resources, i.e., UDDI
  • Uses EPA Controlled Vocabulary (Version 2.7.7
    rev. 1/4/05)
