Biography of Jacob Lawrence

• Born in 1917 in Atlantic City, New Jersey
• His parents separated when he was young, and he
  had to live in lots of foster homes until his
  mother could take care of him and his brothers
  and sisters again
• They moved to Harlem, New York in 1930 when he
  was 13. This had a lot of impact on him.
• He went to art workshops after school at the
  Harlem Art Workshop and Utopia House. He was
  taught by Charles Alston, a great artist.
• He received and art scholarship to the America
  Artist School.
• He liked to paint scenes of the African-American
  city life and also historic African American
  events.
• He painted in bright colors and large shapes.
• He was the first African-American artist to have
  a show at a major New York Gallery.
• He became an art professor at the University of
  Washington.
• He died in Seattle, Washington in 2000.

Opinion

• The bright colors and shapes attracts my
  attention and makes the artwork stand out.
• I like all of the details and people in the
  picture.
• When you look at the painting, you feel like you
  can hear all of the noise on the street and that
  makes you feel like you are there.
