Title: Advising for ATP: Everything An Advisor Needs to Know
1Advising for ATP Everything An Advisor Needs to
Know
- Amy Chester, Academic Advisor, Honors College
- Susann Davis, Instructor and Advisor, Modern
Languages - Kevin P. Thomas, Assistant Director of
Undergraduate Advising Practices
2What will be covered today?
- Tips for Success at ATP
- Processes Prior to ATP
- What do students know about advising at ATP?
- Advising during ATP
- Advising Basics
- Resources?
3Tips for Success at ATP
- Remember we are working with the Millennial
generation of students - Parents lives revolve around them
- Constant contact with friends-Text messaging
- Nurtured, wanted generation
- Value teamwork, not autonomy
- Individual attention in needed
- Ask/Learn the students name not their 800 number
- Explaining the process may seem unnecessary but
this is their first time to experience college
4Processes that occur prior to ATP
- Pre-Registration (process done by AARC)
- Emails have been sent out to departments who have
participated in the past with the program asking
for updates in classes they would like first year
students to be in. - Emails have also been sent out to departments who
have NOT participated in the past with the
program inquiring if they would like to
participate in the Pre-Registration program. - AARC does not pre-register for Math or Chemistry.
- AARC does NOT pre-register transfer students OR
students for Scholars ATP
5More on the processes prior to ATP
- When are ATP packets delivered?
- Pre-Registration and ATP packets are delivered to
the departments two days prior to ATP. - This is done because students can register to
attend ATP three business days prior to the ATP
date. - What do the packets contain?
- Advising Basics (see handout)
- Advance Registration Letters (see handout)
- Schedules (yellow sheet)
- List of expected students to attend your
department during ATP - Other items (depending on college/department)
6What do students know about advising/registration
before they come to us.
- During MC Orientation Assembly students are
informed of general education requirements. - Told where to find general education requirements
in the Undergraduate Catalog. - Told where to find general education requirements
in the Registration Guide. - Students are also given an ATP Student Booklet.
- On page 2 of this booklet is general information
regarding academic advising at WKU. - Also contains what you should expect from your
advisor and what your advisor can expect for you
as a student. - There is also information on page 3 of the
booklet that mentions iCAP briefly. - Undergraduate Catalog
- Course Schedule-Paper Version
7Here come the students!
- Students will typically arrive to the Meet the
Dean session at about 1215 p.m. (based off 2008
schedule) - After the Meet the Dean session students are
taken by departments to advising and then are
registered within the department. - AARC advises all Exploratory students who are not
committed to a college. - AARC also serves as the Help Lab for students
who arrive at the Finish Line and have issues
with their schedules/and or did not have a
positive advising experience in their
college/department
8Advising of students
- Again, remember that although we have done many,
many ATPs this is the students first one. - Students are not numbers.
- If you are going to speak in code, explain to
them what the code is. - Here at ATP we are going to advise you in TLC of
AARC. We are going to take your 800 numbers and
get some CRN numbers and then send you down to
DUC at the end of the day before they send you on
your way. - Depending on how you advise, talk them through
the process. Ex. Course titles, CRN numbers, time
of the day.
9Advising for developmental courses
- Reading Developmental Information
- All of this information is effective for Fall
2009 - Students with a 17 or lower on the reading
section of the ACT MUST take DRDG 080C-College
Reading Strategies. - Students with a 18, 19, or 20 on the reading
section of the ACT MUST take Literacy 199. - As with English developmental courses, students
need to take these courses as soon as possible.
There should not be a delay in taking these
courses. - Students must earn a C or higher to pass the
course. A grade of a D or an F will force the
student to retake the course. - DRDG 080C is Bowling Green Community College and
LTY 199 is Main Campus.
10Advising for students who have developmental
reading
- Courses to avoid for a student with developmental
reading - History 119/120
- Sociology 100
- Psychology 100/199
- Philosophy 115/120
- Religious Studies 100/101/102/103
- Generally courses that require a large amount of
reading
11Advising for English
- English Developmental Information
- If students have a 15 or below on the English
section of the ACT, they must take English 055C
at BGCC. - If students have a 16 or 17 on the English
section of the ACT, they must take English 100
Enhanced. - Students must earn a C or higher to progress to
English 100. - Information for English Courses
- Students who earn a 18-28 on the English section
of the ACT take English 100. - Remember to ask students if they will bring in AP
Credit in English. If they will, do NOT schedule
them for ENG 100.
12Advising for Math
- Developmental Mathematics
- Please see Math Placement Chart.
- When in doubt or have issues contact the Math
department to clarify the questions you may have. - Math 116, Math 116E, or above
- Please see Math Placement Chart.
- When registering for a Math 116E course, students
must also take Math 106. There are paired courses
that must be registered together.
13More advising for math
- Math 109 or Math 116 or above
- Not all students must take Math 116 or above.
- Certain majors/minors require students to have
Math 116. - If you are uncertain of what class is needed,
contact the department. - Developmental courses
- If students only require Math 109, they do not
need to take a developmental course. (they may
have to take an enhanced section) - The Math Placement Chart will take the Math
Placement Exam score and the ACT score to
determine what course the student places into. - If it is a developmental course the path could be
DMA 055C (only at BGCC), DMA 096C (main campus
and BGCC), Math 116/Math 116E (depends on grade
in DMA 096 course. - In order to move to the next level of
developmental math course, students must earn a
C or higher. If they get a D or a F they
must retake the course.
14Advising Basics (handout)
- Covers information regarding English, Reading,
Modern Languages, International Students, Math
Placement, Chemistry Placement, AP and CLEP,
Transfer, and the Pre-College Curriculum. - Is a great tool to keep near by when advising
students. - When Advising Basics is updated-Available on AARC
website-Updated regularly and at least annually
before Scholars ATP.
15Advising for Modern Languages
- Placement Policy of 2000/2004
- Students who begin their college career as
degree-seeking students during the 2004 summer
term and thereafter will be required to complete
a secondsemester elementary foreign language
course (or any higher-level course). - Students who earned two or more credits for
language study in middle or high school may not
enroll as beginners in a 101 course in that same
language. They must begin at the 102 level or
higher if they want to continue that same
language at WKU. Students may choose to enroll
in a 101 course in a language different from the
one they studied in high school and complete 101
and 102 in that new language.
16Advising for Modern Languages
- Students with no high school language experience
- WKU will admit students who have not completed
the pre-college curriculum, but they must make up
this entrance deficiency by passing a 101
(first-semester elementary level) course in any
foreign language within the first 24 credit hours
of their WKU studies. These students must also
complete a 102 course to satisfy the General
Education Requirement.
17Advising for Modern Languages
- WKU Placement test
- Purpose limitations
- Students who come to Western with strong language
skills or who have had more than 2 years of high
school language study in a language should take a
departmental placement exam to see if they can
place into a course higher than 102. The French,
German, and Spanish placement exams are available
online at http//www.wku.edu/modernlanguages.
The exam takes approximately 20 minutes and
scores are automatically reported to the
Department of Modern Languages. For exams in
other languages, please contact the Department of
Modern Languages at (270) 745-2401. - Support
