Scenario
SARS, Severe acute respiratory syndrome, is an
atypical pneumonia of unknown cause. This
disease was first recognized in February 2003.
It usually affects adults aged 25-70 years. The
incubation period is usually 2-7 days.

Symptoms
  • Present after November 2002 with high fever
    (gt38oC)
  • Contact with person with history of travel in
    susceptible 10 days prior to symptoms
  • Have headache and myalgia
  • Chest infiltrate

Causative Agent
  • Thought to be a coronavirus( Coronaviridae)first
    isolated in 1965, spherical enveloped virion,
    80-160 nm in diameter, crown-like in appearance,
    club-shaped peplomars, single-stranded, linear,
    non-segmented, positive-sense RNA genome
  • Usually produce an afebrile cold in adults,
    characterized by nasal discharge, and malaise
    may exacerbate respiratory symptoms in asthmatic
    and chronic pulmonary disease patients
    implicated in gastroenteritis greater occurrence
    in children maybe associated with pneumonia and
    pleural reactions,

Occurence
  • Thought to have originated in Asia and has been
    traced throughout North America and Europe.
  • These cases have been tracked with various
    methods by the World Health Organization and the
    Center for Disease Control

Goal
Your task is to understand the nature and
transmission of SARS. With this knowledge you
must provide information that would be useful in
preventing an outbreak as well as how to contain
an outbreak of this disease in your hometown.

your findings to include the following

  • Introductory slide of SARS basic information
  • Chart citing previous locations and number of
    cases
  • Graph with transmission rates and locations
  • Your EMERGENCY PLAN in case of outbreak including
    funding required in Excel document
