Metadata Services
  • OCLCs new Metadata program will transform
OCLCs traditional cataloging service to a
    comprehensive metadata creation and management
service for librarians, library users and
    information partners.

32
Megatrends for Metadata
  • The overall demand for quality metadata has
    dramatically increased
  • The number of libraries requiring authoritative
    electronic metadata continues to increase
    worldwide
  • A large number of library professionals (40-50)
are eligible for retirement in the next ten
years. Professional catalogers in particular are
not being developed in library schools to take
    their place.

33
Working Objectives
  • Provide access to more metadata resources
  • Broader coverage of electronic and print
    resources
  • Add value to existing bibliographic records
  • Support a wider range of metadata formats
  • From other libraries
  • From information publishers and authors
  • Earlier in the publication cycle
  • Improve the productivity of metadata creation
  • Continue to play a major role in metadata
standards-setting bodies (MARBI, ISO, etc.) and
in evolving new standards for information
services such as Dublin Core and ONIX.

34
Working Objectives (contd)
  • Provide library staff with more efficient tools
  • Single entry point for all services
  • Better integration between OCLC and the local
    system
  • Better management of electronic resources
  • Metadata maintenance services

35
OCLC Metadata Services
  • Online metadata creation
  • Metadata capture services
  • Shelf-ready metadata services
  • Metadata linking services
  • Metadata maintenance services
  • Consulting and Contract Services

36
Online Metadata Creation Service
  • Integrate existing online interfaces and products
    into a single entry-point, browser-accessible,
    web-based service
  • Maintain/improve productivity levels through
    improved tools
  • Support more metadata standards (EAD, TEI, etc.)
  • Support additional scripts (Hebrew, Cyrillic,
    etc.)

37
Metadata Capture Services
  • New tools for authors to create metadata for
their work, and for patrons to create reviews.
  • Earlier publication cycle metadata creation
  • Work with publishers
  • CIP upgrade program
  • Material vendors cataloging
  • Metadata licensing/exchange program
  • The metadata may include content, links to
    content, or holdings information.

38
Shelf-ready Services
  • As libraries select and order both physical and
    electronic materials, metadata is automatically
supplied, allowing libraries to capture metadata
    without direct staff involvement.
  • PromptCat reduces copy cataloging costs by 80
  • http//www.oclc.org/oclc/prompt/servover.htm
  • Material Vendor Cataloging agents

39
Metadata Maintenance Services
  • These services ensure that the data in the
Extended WorldCat bibliographic records will be
    accurate, up-to-date, and reflect the
authoritative sources used to establish access
    points.
  • Authorities (MARS)
  • http//www.oclc.org/western/wlnprods/mars/
  • Bib Notification (URL Update Service)
  • http//www.oclc.org/oclc/promo/10040bib/10040bib.h

40
Consulting and Contract Services
  • Consulting services to help libraries evaluate
and select solutions that fit their workflow
needs and lower their overall costs for technical
    processing.
  • Contract services provide libraries with an
    outsourcing option for technical services.
  • Conversion services
  • Cataloging services
  • Collection Assessment
  • AsiaLink/collection development
  • http//www.oclc.org/oclc/asialink/case_study.htm

41
Metadata Linking Services
  • Access to evaluative information through standard
    identifiers
  • Linking versus Loading
  • Cheaper than loading data
  • More timely than loaded data
  • Easier to bundle data content delivery
  • Some owners more comfortable with linking than
    with loading
  • Rights management

42
Schedule and Dependencies
  • Goal for Online Metadata Creation completion is
    July 2003
  • Phased transition over a three year period
  • Steps
  • Eliminate Standalone Products
  • Improve productivity of services
  • Integrate services to form a Metadata Desktop
  • New Database Management System with WorldCat
converted to Unicode is expected by July 2002
