Title: Understanding Alzheimer’s: Statistics and Professional Care

1
A Look at Alzheimers
2
Why the Focus on Alzheimers?
  • Over 5 million Americans live with Alzheimers
  • Every 67 seconds someone in the United States
    develops Alzheimers
  • Nearly half a million people in the U.S. die from
Alzheimers each year, making it the 6th leading
    cause of death

3
What is Alzheimers?
  • Alzheimers disease is the most common form of
dementia. It is caused by damage to neurons in
the brain associated with memory and other
cognitive skills. Alzheimers patients can be
    affected in critical ways, including
  • Declined memory
  • Altered behavior
  • Loss of ability to think clearly
  • Impaired control over bodily functions
  • Emotional volatility
  • Bed bound
  • Need for around-the-clock care

4
Women and Alzheimers
  • 2 out 3 Alzheimers patients are women,
approximately 3.2 million out of 5 million
    individuals
  • Women 60 years of age are two times more likely
to develop Alzheimers than breast cancer

5
Alzheimers in the United States
  • 1 out of 5 dollars of Medicare funding is spent
on cases associated with Alzheimers and other
    dementias
  • Average per-person Medicare spending for seniors
with Alzheimer's disease is 19x higher than that
    of seniors with other conditions
  • In 2013, The American Society of Caring for
those with Alzheimers costs totaled an estimated
    214 billion

6
Seeking Help for Your Loved One
  • There often times comes a point where families
are unable to tend to an Alzheimers victim on
their own. When this happens it is recommended to
    seek out elderly care.

7
How Do Caregivers Help?
  • Caregiving for an Alzheimers patient can be all
encompassing. They may require assistance with
activities of daily living (ADL) to a great
    extent. ADLS can include
  • Getting in and out of bed
  • Dressing
  • Getting to and from the toilet
  • Bathing
  • Managing incontinence
  • Feeding
  • Chores, such as cleaning
