About Type 2 Diabetes Type 2 diabetes is a
chronic condition, which arises due to either the
inability of the body to produce enough insulin
or insulin resistance, or both. Insulin is a
peptide hormone produced by the Islets of
Langerhans (pancreatic cells). It is produced in
an immature form called preproinsulin, which is
proteolytically cleaved to obtain proinsulin and
then insulin. Type 2 diabetes nearly accounts for
90-95 percent of the total diabetic cases. Type 2
diabetes is usually diagnosed in middle-aged and
older people however, it can occur even during
childhood. Type 2 diabetes was also known as
adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin-dependent
diabetes. Risk factors for type 2 diabetes
include high blood pressure, advancing age,
overweight, history of gestational diabetes,
family history of diabetes, ethnicity, poor
nutrition during pregnancy, unhealthy diet,
