Success out of Failure

• Behind almost every success story is an
  embarrassing first effort, a stumble, a setback
  or a radical change of direction. Sometimes, when
  we think we fail to succeed at something, we
  actually learn the most valuable lessons.

Reading

• Joshua Chapter 24, Verses 19 to 25

• The reading for today is a song of praise of God
  from the Old Testament book of Joshua.
• In this reading, Joshua speaks with the leaders
  of Israel saying these words

• If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods,
  then he will turn and do you harm
• and consume you, after having done you good.
• And the people said to Joshua,
• No, we will serve the Lord!

• Then Joshua said to the people,
• You are witnesses against yourselves
• that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.
• And they said, We are witnesses.
• He said, Then put away the foreign gods that are
  among you,
• And give your hearts to the Lord, the God of
  Israel.

• The people said to Joshua,
• The Lord our God we will serve, and him we will
  obey.
• So Joshua made an agreement with the people that
  day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at
  Shechem
• This is the Word of the Lord,
• Thanks be to God

• Dear God,
• When people are in fear, when they think that
  they will fail - they need to remember that you
  said -
• Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is
  the kingdom of heaven.
• Give courage to those who are poor in spirit,
  encourage them and give them confidence so that
  they might enjoy the kingdom of heaven.
• Lord in your Mercy, Hear our Prayer

• Dear God,
• We think of those people who believe they cannot
  succeed and who are too frightened to try. We
  remember your words to them -
• Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit
  the earth.
• Be a guiding light to all who are humble,
  strengthen them to know you, to love you and to
  enjoy the confidence that comes from faith in
  God.
• Lord in your Mercy, Hear our Prayer

• Dear God,
• We also pray for all those who show kindness to
  others. You spoke about these people, too, when
  you said -
• Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive
  mercy.
• Teach us that, by showing kindness, so we will
  receive kindness in return.

• Dear God,
• In times of trouble, there are people who seek
  peace and who help to repair damaged friendships.
  About such people, you said -
• Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be
  called the children of God.
• Make us children of God, in all our actions, our
  words and our thoughts.

• Dear God,
• As we approach the end of the schoolyear, we ask
  that you watch over each and every one of us.
  When we are tempted to stray, guide us back to
  the correct way of behaving. Help us focus on the
  task that needs to be done and to strive to
  accomplish as much as we possibly can.
• You are the light of the world. Please be the
  light that guides us.
• We ask this in your name. Amen
