What Is Hourly Home Care?

  • If you or a loved one is in need of hourly home
care, you may be confused regarding what that
involves. Simply put, hourly home care involves
someone coming to your home to help with certain
things such as errands, household chores, and
certain simple medical procedures (checking vital
    signs, administering medication, administering
breathing treatments, etc.). The hourly home care
provider will typically do things such as help
their client bathe, dress, and perform certain
aspects of grooming such as shaving a man's face.
They will also cook meals and be able to follow
    instructions for special dietary restrictions.

3
  • If the person who is in need of or already
receiving hourly home care has a military
affiliation, you can check with your local
Veterans Affairs department to see if they will
help cover all or some of the costs related to
hourly home care. If the patient has no military
affiliation but is receiving benefits such as
Medicare and a state-funded medical assistance
program (Medicaid, for example), you can also
check with them to see if they offer any
    financial assistance.

4
  • Hourly home care workers are typically registered
CNA's (Certified Nursing Assistants) who come
into your home and are there to provide care and
support for a set number of hours. However, some
hourly home care workers are PCA's (Personal Care
Assistants/Aides) who are usually capable of
performing the same tasks as CNA's. CNA's are
required to be CPR certified, and both should
also possess a certain degree of knowledge
regarding medical terminology and simple medical
procedures such as checking a patient's vitals
and monitoring blood sugar levels for diabetic
    clients.

5
  • Hourly home care personnel are often a blessing
in disguise for caregivers of patients with
Alzheimer's or other debilitating or terminal
diseases. It allows for the patient and their
family to remain in their home, a familiar
environment that benefits everyone involved. It
also allows for the caregiver to tend to
necessary errands and appointments, and it also
gives the caregiver a sense of independence and
freedom in the form of being able to take a break
from the tedious task of being a 24-hour
    caregiver.

6
  • Aside from the medical aspect of things, hourly
home care personnel often become their
clientele's confidantes, lending an ear in a time
when it is often desperately needed. Just knowing
that someone is there to lend a helping hand, and
an empathetic ear can make all the difference for
    an entire family.
  • If you are in need of an hourly home care worker,
the Internet, as well as your doctor, local phone
book listings, and local hospitals will be able
to offer you a plethora of information regarding
    securing this vital service.
