To start and complete any task you need to have
basic knowledge of the tools required. There are
many different kinds of tool in plumbing.
However, you must know which are the most
essential to keep handy at home and how they can
help you accomplish a DIY plumbing task. The
following tools will help cover basic plumbing
repairs such as fixing a leaking pipe or
unclogging a drain
Tongue And Groove Pliers These also go by the
name of water pump pliers or adjustable pliers
and are the first handy tool you will need for
all plumbing projects. Tongue and groove pliers
help to grab, pull, hold, tighten, twist or
loosen something, which is half the work in
plumbing. Adjustable Wrench Plumbing parts that
have hex shaped nuts are better to work on by
using an adjustable wrench. Normally, supply
lines and compression fittings have the hex
shaped nuts so make sure that the moving jaw is
firm in its setting and doesnt slip under
torque. An alternative tool to an adjustable
wrench is locking pliers so you can choose one
with which you feel most at ease to work with.
Basin Wrench The other important tool to invest
in is a basin wrench, which helps to reach behind
the narrow and deep space of a sink to tighten or
loosen the nuts holding it in place.
Hand Auger It is also called a plumbers snake.
This tool will help you to clear obstructions in
the tub, shower, sink, toilets and drain lines as
it has a 25 feet long flexible steel cable.
Plunger A plunger is a plumbers best friend.
You need it for your DIY home plumbing repairs as
it helps to dislodge clogs from the sink, tub or
toilets among other places. Along with a standard
size-tubing cutter, you can also get a close
quarter mini cutter for tight spaces.

Tubing Cutter If you are working with copper
pipes and need to solder it, a tubing cutter is
the most essential tool to do it in the quickest
and easiest way. It looks like a C-clamp but a
close quarter mini-cutter works better in tight
spaces than a standard size one. Propane Torch
A propane torch helps to solder copper pipe and
fittings. Also, invest in a self-igniting torch
head that will light at the squeeze of a trigger.
Sounds more convenient than using matches,
doesnt it?
Plumbers Tape You must keep a roll of the
plumbers tape in your toolbox, also known as
Teflon tape. It ensures that you have sealed a
threaded pipe, supply line or showerhead well.
Pipe Vises Pipe vises help hold the pipes firmly
in place. Available in many different functions,
grips and sizes. It is a handy tool to stock in
your plumbing toolbox. These are the basic tools
that will help you perform minor to average
plumbing repairs. Always remember to inspect all
the tools vigilantly before purchasing. As you
attempt to perform minor plumbing repairs, you
will learn to use these tools effectively. Make
sure you are wearing heavy-duty rubber gloves
when repairing a toilet clog. If an item has
fallen into a drain, the best tool to retrieve it
with is pipe wrenches or slip-joint pliers.
