Matter! Matter ? Wheres some matter? I dont
see any matter!
Its everywhere! In fact , Im lying on some
right now.

Have no fear I am here to tell you
about matter and its not hard at all.

Matter is anything that takes up space!

Wow! Thats a lot of stuff!

I have more matter than you, Evan.
Yes, and so are we. We take up space
too!
Just look at us. Some of us have more
matter than others because we take up
more space.

You can usually see matter, but not always.
Air is matter. It takes up space.

Did you know that matter can change ? We
change matter all the time. In fact, every
time we cook, we change matter!

Think about it! When we build something ,
we usually build it with wood. So, we
have to change the size and shape of the
wood to do that.

Temperature , like hot and cold, can
change some kinds of matter

Boil water and watch it change . The water
bubbles until it becomes steam. Add
enough heat and the water will completely
disappear.

Look at what Evan did to his matter (the
marshmallows) when he added heat maybe a
little too much heat.
Yummm. This is just the way I like them black
and crunchy on the outside and gooey in the
middle.

Freeze water and watch it change. Freezing
temperatures can change water into ice that
is hard as rock!

Cold temperatures change the water vapor in
the clouds . Water can become rain, or
snow, or hail, or even sleet!

Thats right! Cold temperatures cause water
to freeze into snow and ice. Then when
the temperature turns warm, the ice and
snow melt back into water again.

Temperature isnt the only thing that can
change matter. Force and cutting can
also change matter. Remember what I said
about the trees and building things with
wood?

This is my cousin, Tyler. He is trying to
use force to make this rock into sand. (
Grandma says it will take him ten years
to do it . )

Look at Libby ! She is using her force
to make something in the sand. What
do you think it will be?

Oh no! Now she is using her force to
smash it down ! Oh well, sooner or later
the ocean waves would have used their force
to wash the sand away. Thats force for
you.
