Title: How diabetes affects eyes

1
How diabetes affects eyes
2
Vision problems and Diabetes
  • Diabetes and vision trouble are more closely
connected than many people realize. In some
cases, a sudden change in your vision may not
necessarily be your eyes becoming weak, but a
sign that you need to check your blood sugar
    levels.

3
Diabetes can creep up on you without you knowing.
4
Replace eye glasses
  • If you know you have diabetes, then replacing
your eye glasses regularly for worsening vision
is not advisable. It is important to maintain
regular checkups with ophthalmologists if you
have high-blood sugar as the lens of the eyes and
the retina can become affected by vision
    threatening eye diseases.

5
High-blood sugar directly affects the lens of the
eyes by causing it to swell
  • This usually takes place in spurs and is not a
continuous issue for diabetes patients. The safe
level for blood sugar is, between 70 and 130
milligrams per D/L before meals, and not higher
than 180 mg/dL after meals. When the blood sugar
level goes higher, blurred or glared vision may
    be experienced temporarily.

6
Diabetes causes blood vessels to swell up, fluid
to be trapped, causing nerve damage.
  • A third visual problem that is a result of
diabetes is Diabetic retinopathy. The retina is
the inner back surface that is responsible for
receiving light impulses and turning them into
electrical impulses that is sent via the optic
nerve to the brain. The retina has tiny micro
vascular vessels which can swell and damage the
retina. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause
for irreversible damage leading to blindness.

7
It is important that you see a specialized
diabetic eye doctor often if you have diabetes to
help you obtain the right treatment for visual
maintenance.
  • Glared or blurry vision can be sporadic and you
may not experience these symptoms all the time,
but only during the times of day that your blood
    sugar has risen.
  • It is also recommended that you first have your
blood sugar tested by a general physician and
then visit a reputed eye clinic in Dubai
for regular eye checkups and diabetes management
    in regards to your vision.
