  • Rational Choice and Deterrence Theory. In Chapter
7 of Crime Prevention, Robinson states that
"Rational choice and deterrence theories are two
related theories that help understand why
criminal justice including crime control and
crime prevention activities of police, courts,
and corrections should help us reduce crime in
society" (2012). Answer one of the following
    questions
  • a. How do these theories help us understand the
    relationship between criminals and law
    enforcement, the courts, corrections, and
    society?
  • b. What are some of the results we would expect
to see if these theories are correct in assessing
    criminal activity?
  • c. How would the rational choice and deterrence
theories change the policing strategy of your
department if you were in a police department
utilizing traditional policing techniques or a
    department utilizing community oriented and
    problem solving techniques?

technique will effectively reduce the possibility
of the crime occurring. If the technique is
effective, what is the expected result on social
and criminal justice? You may use this research

  • Focus of the Final Project
  • The purpose of the Final Project is for you to
    demonstrate your understanding of crime
prevention programs and the role crime prevention
plays in the overall criminal justice system. You
may select a crime prevention program that
addresses law enforcement, the courts, or
corrections or it may be a comprehensive program
that addresses all three. The program may address
the adult justice system, juvenile justice
systems, or both. For the purposes of this
assignment assume, you are preparing a proposal
to a city, county, or state governmental body to
recommend the implementation of a crime
prevention program within their jurisdiction. You
need to demonstrate the value of the crime
prevention program and its effectiveness in
reducing crime thus reducing the overall costs to
the jurisdiction or building value that improves
the effectiveness of crime prevention to the
    community justifying the additional expenditures.
