  • Lord Shiva is traditionally credited with
    spreading the knowledge of Hatha Yoga. Shiva gave
    the knowledge to Goddess Parvati on an island,
    where a fish (Matsya) heard the entire discourse.
    Shiva took pity on the fish and transformed it
    into a Siddha, called Matsyendra. Matsyendra
    taught this form to Chaurangi and Goraksha. Yogi
    Swatmarama, a sage in 15th century compiled the
    Hatha Yoga Pradipika, after learning from
    Goraksha. Modern day Hatha Yoga courses are based
    on these teachings of using Hatha Yoga as a means
    to purify the body for higher meditation.
