A Brief Guide to Diet Planning after Bariatric
Surgery
  • Bariatric surgery may result in a
significant amount of weight loss, provided you
follow a strict dietary routine post-procedure.
Though a number of individuals in Australia
undergo weight loss surgery, not all are aware of
the ways to keep a tab on their weight.
  • If you have undergone the surgery or
planning to have one, read the blog to know the
diet plan to follow after the surgery.

3
Initial steps
  • Eating a balanced diet that preserves
muscle tissue and helps to retain strength is
important. Post-surgery, you might find it
difficult to stick to the minimalistic diet that
doctors prescribe, however, you will eventually
get familiar with the change in your diet.

4
Low calorie diet
  • You are allowed only liquids for 2 weeks
after the surgery This is followed by blended or
pureed diet for the next 2 weeks.
  • You can add in soft foods from the 5th
week for a few weeks before you start with
regular food. Avoid rice, brown bread, raw
uncooked vegetables, cut fruits and chewing gum
    and carbonated beverages.

5
Consume more liquids Say goodbye to alcohol
  • Sugar-products, fruit juices might
knock off the lactose in your system and cause
diarrhea. Take more liquids and not more than 300
to 600 calories a day. Consumption of yogurt
based products will give you strength and
    vitality.
  • Consuming alcohol after bariatric
surgery may turn out to be life threatening.
Beer, wine, whisky, vodka get easily absorbed in
the body and disturb digestion process.
Consumption of alcoholic drinks also lead to
weight gain, high blood pressure and
    hypertension. In addition, alcohol consumption
    might kick-start thyroid problems causing
    weakness, depression and fatigue.

6
Include more protein in your diet
  • Eat chicken, meat, fish, eggs, tofu,
cheese, bluefin tuna as sushi dishes, soy milk.
Consume anything and everything that builds
muscles and not fat. The doctor might prescribe
food supplements and chewable multivitamins of
very high potency to help you regain strength and
get back to work. Do not skip these doses and
break them down into small pieces so that they
can be chewed, broken down and assimilated easily
    by the system.
  • Calcium tablets of 1200-2000 mg are
prescribed to prevent osteoporosis, a disease
that leads to delicate and brittle bones that are
prone to injury. The doctor might prescribe
nearly 800 to 1000 international units of Vitamin
D and iron tablets so that the body gains
additional strength. Vitamin D is also good for
    reproductive organs and offers vitality
    post-surgery.

7
Last Few Words
  • Following a strict diet is necessary to
ensure that you dont gain weight and get the
desired results. You might find it difficult to
avoid food items and drinks that you love,
however, practicing a healthy lifestyle for a few
days is enough to help you control cravings. Do
discuss the post-surgery diet with your doctor
and make sure to follow it religiously to stay
    fit.
