INTRODUCTION ABOUT CROHNS DISEASE
  • Crohns disease is an autoimmune disease. A study
from Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America
revealed that as many as 700,000 American people
    are diagnosed with Crohns disease.
  • Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory
disease of the intestine which affects
gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) from the mouth
    to the anus.
  • It primarily affects the end of the small
intestine the ileum where it joins the large
    intestine (or colon).
  • The Crohn's disease not only affects the last
segment of the small intestine, the inflammation
can lead to destructive effect in other part of
the body like joints, eyes, mouth and skin.
  • It can also develop stones in kidney and gall.

Crohns Disease Symptoms
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fever and fatigue
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Reduced appetite and weight loss
  • Mouth sores
  • Perianal disease

Crohns Disease Diagnosis
  • It generally takes a lot of time to find the
Crohns disease, it would even take years.
Doctors will start the diagnosis by gathering
information about your health history, diet,
other symptoms, environment and family history
details. After then they will do physical
examinations through and add to your record of
    symptoms.
  • Lab tests are required in order to look for any
problems linked to intestinal inflammation and
thereby early identification of the disease. Lab
    tests may include
  • Blood protein levels
  • Body mineral levels
  • Red blood cell counts
  • White blood cell counts
  • Blood sedimentation rates
  • Stool samples to check for blood or infectious
    microbes

Crohns Disease Diet
  • There is no specific diet course for inflammatory
bowel disease or Crohns disease. It is actually
a pure experimentation, the patient has to test
and try him/herself with various diets.
  • He/ She can take some quantities of food and test
the reactions of the bowl and then decide what is
manageable. One more thing is to keep count of
calories and talk to your doctor often.
  • Crohns disease is the result of the immune
system attacking its own GI tract. It mistakes
the good bacteria with the bad one and starts
destroying the same. He/ She must be cautious to
keep the inflammatory flare-up levels down.

Crohns Disease Diet
  • The victim should look for a more balanced diet,
that is protein rich but also easily digestible.
  • During Crohns disease, it is good to have
low-fibre diets that avoid fruits and vegetables,
nuts, raisins, seeds and whole grains. Low fiber
foods are easy to digest and tend to stimulate
less secretion of intestinal fluids that causes
less contraction in the bowel. This can help
    prevent diarrhoea and abdominal cramping.
  • Grains  Grains have high fiber contents,
especially whole grains. High fiber factor can
increase abdominal pain and cause diarrhoea. Opt
for low fiber foods like white bread, crackers,
    pasta, and rice.
  • Fruits and Veggies  Another source of high fiber
is Fruits and vegetables. It is not necessary to
eliminate every fruit and vegetable from the diet
list, but process the food further by steaming it
or making it different like sauce, steamed
vegetable etc.. Processing food makes the food
    easily digestible.

Crohns Disease Diet
  • Protein and Meat  Avoid higher fat food, try out
eggs, fish, peanut butter (creamy versions only),
white meat poultry etc.. Such foods that lower
fat but protein rich, it helps to stabilize the
protein in the body during Crohns disease.
  • Dairy Products  Crohns patients cannot tolerate
dairy very well. In general fat contents in dairy
products creates the risk of gas and diarrhoea.
Also, dairy products aggravate the swollen
bowels, hence it is highly recommended to take
low-fat dairy products like substitutes from
plants like yogurt, and cheese made from soy,
    coconut, almond etc..
  • Water  Crohns patients should drink abundant
    water.
