What is Transplant Shock?
  • Refers to a number of stresses occurring in
    recently planted trees and shrubs involving the
    failure of the plant to root well thus being
    unable to establish itself in the landscape.

What Causes Transplant Shock?
  • Nursery plants are not natural(Grown very fast
    without attention to natural systems.)
  • Planting sites are not natural.
  • Water management is critical.(Often irrigation
    is not ready for plantings, etc.)

Nursery Plants Not Natural
  • Nursery plants are grown to meet physical
    specifications.
  • All attention is to inventory turnover.
  • Many of the natural immune systems plants have
    all evolved with are not present.
  • BB have had up to 60 of roots removed

  • Fill soils are typically sourced sub surface and
    are usually dead.
  • Heavy equipment compact soils and kills
    beneficial microorganisms therein.
