Hinduism- A way of life
Hinduism known as Sanathana Dharma or Law Eternal
is a way of life and has been in existence since
the timeless beginning. The word Sanatana means
ancient it also means eternal or everlasting.
Hence, the word Sanatana is defined as that which
is old and at the same time ever new. It is
ancient yet ever fresh, ever relevant
transcending time and age. The people who had
inhabited the land, which is called Bhaarat,
Hindustan or India since thousands of years
constituted a society, which is very ancient
(Sanaatana). The way of life they had evolved
came to be known as Sanatana Dharma. The religion
has its roots in the Vedas which are believed to
have originated along with the dawn of creation.
Hence, Hinduism is also referred to as Vaidika
dharma or Vedic religion. The Vedas deal with a
variety of subjects from the mundane to the
lofty. There is nothing that has been left
uncovered, for the Vedas deal with all subjects-
astrology, astronomy, architecture, medicine,
art, music, dance, martial arts, yoga, food,
health, poetry, literature and the list goes on.

in the coastal town of Puri, Odisha. The
Jagannath Temple is one of the Char Dham
pilgrimages and devout Hindus expect to visit
this temple at least once in their lifetime. The
temple is also associated with the Chariot
festival or Rath Yatra in which the three primary
deities of the temple are carried on the
exquisitely decorated chariots, which are pulled
by thousands of ardent devotees.

Mahalakshmi Naryani Temple
The temple spread over 100 acres plot was
inaugurated in August 2007. The temple was
completed in six years. The golden temple as it
is popularly known is covered entirely with gold,
except for the flooring.
The temple, a concrete structure was initially
layered with copper and then by gold. Pure gold
is beaten into thin foils and about nine to
fifteen layers of gold foil is used to cover the
entire temple complex. The intricate carvings in
gold add to the richness of the temple.

Temples of Assam
The state of Assam lies along the foothills of
the Himalayas in the Brahmaputra valley. Its
history dates back to the Vedic period. Shaktism,
Shaivism and Vaishnavism flourished in the state
with many temples and monuments being built
reflecting the great architecture of the Koch,
Kachari and the Ahom dynasties. One of the most
famous temples of Assam is the Umananda temple in
Guwahati.

Temples of Manipur
Manipur is one of the North Eastern states of
India and is called a jewel of India and
Switzerland of the East as it is surrounded by
green hills, deep valleys, cascading waterfalls
and exotic blooms. It has many famous temples

One of the most famous and largest Vaishnavite
temples in Manipur is the Shri Govindajee temple

Govindajee (Krishna).

Temples of Jammu and kashmir
Hindu temples share certain core ideas, themes
and symbols though they are of many styles
adapted to different deities and regional
beliefs. Their structural rules are described in
various ancient treatises on architecture like
Vastu Shastras and Bruhat Samhita while the
spiritual principles underlying them are given in
the ancient scriptural treatises like the Vedas,
Upanishads and other texts. Temples are sacred
sites which house the deity venerated and are
meant to encourage reflection and contemplation,
help in the purification of the heart and mind
and facilitate the process of inner realisation
within the devotee.

Maha Bodhi Temple
Located at Bodh Gaya, Bihar, the Maha Bodhi
Temple is also known as the Mahabodhi Mahavihara
or the Great Stupa. The Maha Bodhi Temple is one
of the four holiest Buddhist sites, the others
are Lumbini in Nepal (the birth place of Lord
Buddha), Sarnath, near Varanasi (his first
message was preached here) and Kushinagar, near
Gorakhpur (the place where he died). The Maha
Bodhi Temple was one of the eighty four thousand
shrines built by King Ashoka in the 3rd Century
B.C. and was also recognized by UNESCO as a World
Heritage Site in 2002.

Pashupatinath Temple
Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the
Lord Pashupatinath Temple is the largest Hindu
temple in the world. Lord Pashupatinath Temple is
located in Deopatan, near Kathmandu and is
situated on the banks of River Bagmati. The
temple dates back to 400 A.D. and is considered
as one of the greatest Shiva Temples in the
continent.
The tantra tradition is practiced till date in
Lord Pashupatinath Temple and is considered as

special festival of Pancha Bali, a ritualistic
sacrifice offered to Bhairav (a tantric form of
Lord Shiva).

ambience of the Sri Krishna Temple resembles an
ashram, where devotees experience divine aura.
Sri Madhavacharya was also headquartered in
Udupi, from where he propagated the Dvaita
Philosophy.

Mariamman temple is an ancient temple. The temple
was built by King Vijayaraya Chakravarthi in the
18th Century. During the period of 17th-18th
Century, Tiruchirapalli was ruled by the
Vijayanagar rulers. The rulers had committed to
build a temple for the deity, provided they won
the war. As the Vijayanagar rulers won the war,
they built the temple for goddess Mariamman.

Sun Temple in Konark
The Sun Temple in Konark, Orissa is dedicated to
the Sun God, Surya. The name Konark is derived
from two words i.e. Kona meaning Sun and Arka
meaning Lord. It is widely believed that the Sun
Temple was constructed here to commemorate the
triumph of rulers of the Ganga Dynasty over the
Muslim invaders. The European travelers used to
refer to the temple as the Black Pagoda.
Renowned Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore once
had written about the temple as Here the
language of stone surpasses the language of man.
Worship of the Sun God was in existence right
from the ancient times. The Sun God, also revered
as the Dharam Devata, was believed to be the
primary source of life giving energy. The Sun God
was also known as Biranchi Narayan. As per the
Vedas, Surya is basically the unification of the
Holy Trinity i.e Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and
Lord Shiva.
