Title: Why Samarium Cobalt Magnets Are Preferred Over Neodymium Iron Boron?

1
Samarium Cobalt Magnets Are Preferred Over
Neodymium Iron Boron

The most common Rare Earth Magnets are Neodynium
Iron Boron, but that is not what exactly you are
looking for always.

Rather you need to ask whether the magnets
inside the Tube Magnet is sintered or bonded.
Samarium Cobalt Magnet (SmCo) are powerful
magnets which is also rare earth magnets, it is
composed of samarium and cobalt.
All Samarium Cobalt is sintered and therefore,
these magnets work with high temperature
applications where neodymium fails to work.

4
The maximum operating temperatures for this
magnet is between 250 and 550 C, whereas
standard Neodynium Iron Boron magnets are
suitable for applications up to 80 C.
Samarium Cobalt magnets are commonly used for
magnetic couplings, high performance motors and
magnetic separators.
In Curie temperature for samarium cobalt, it
varies from the range of 700 to 800 C. Also,
Samarium Cobalt subject to less corrosion than a
Neodymium magnet, thus, it does not require
coating or plating.

Features Of Samarium Cobalt Magnet
  • It offers strong resistance to demagnetization
  • Standard tolerances for Samarium Cobalt magnet
    is /-.005 for ground dimensions

  • Samarium Cobalt 15 offers 16 MGOe (energy
product) to 22 MGOe, it is composed using
approximately 50 samarium and 50 cobalt
  • Samarium Cobalt 217 offers 24 MGOe to 32 MGOe
and is made of 25 samarium, 5 copper, 18 iron,
2 hafnium or zirconium, with the remainder being
    cobalt

Both Samarium Cobalt and high temperature
Neodynmium Iron Boron magnets maintain their
magnetic strength at higher temperatures.
However, Samarium Cobalt is significantly more
expensive than Neodymium Iron Boron but they do
offer stable temperature for very high
temperature applications.

Samarium Cobalt magnet cannot be formed with
conventional drilling, turning or milling
processes, this must be on ground before they are
magnetized. Also, the large or complex assemblies
are usually magnetized prior to assembly. All
Samarium Cobalt magnets are produced on the range
from 0.8 to 1.15 Tesla.
