How to Hang a Radiator on Different Types of Wall
2
Are you thinking of hanging a new radiator? If
you are, and you would like to understand how to
hang it on different types of wall (e.g. plaster
board/studwork wall or masonry/brick wall), then
you should read this article. Here, we are going
to explore the various things that you need to do
to hang a radiator on both types of wall. Which
Type of Wall Do You Have? The first thing that
you need to do is to work out whether the wall
you wish to hang the radiator upon is a studwork
wall or a masonry wall. Theres a simple test for
this. Knock on the wall if it sounds hollow,
its a studwork wall, and if it sounds damp, its
a masonry wall. To be 100 sure, though, tap on
an outer wall on the inside (i.e. a wall that has
one side outside the house and the other inside
the house). Does the radiator wall sound the
same? If so, its a masonry wall. If not, its a
studwork wall.

Wall Mounted Electric Radiators

If you're having any doubts at this stage,
consult a builder. They will be able to tell you
which type of wall you have and this will prevent
you encountering problems, such as placing a
heavy and unsupported load (i.e. the radiator) on
a weak wall (i.e. a studwork wall). N.B. this
advice is relevant for most types of radiator.
Whether wall mounted electric radiators or
traditional central heating radiators, if its
going on the wall, you need to understand the
points of this article. The only exception to
this advice is floor-secured radiators, such as
old-fashioned cast iron radiators. Hanging the
Radiator on a Studwork Wall A studwork wall is
one that is made of plaster and that has a hollow
space behind it. It is a non-supporting wall, and
as such is less strong than a masonry
(supporting) wall.

  • be blocked in any other way.
  • The old habit of putting radiators behind
curtains or close to heavy furniture like an
armchair, we now know is self-defeating.
  • The thermostats get confused and the right amount
of heat is not getting into the rooms airspace.

In order to attach the radiator, you need to find
the bit of timber or metal structure within the
studwork wall to which the wall is attached. You
can hire a special detector from your local tool
hire shop. This will help you to locate the
timber. The timber is the strongest section of
the wall and is connected to the houses main
structure. This is why its important to locate
the timber and connect the wall brackets to the
timber. You will need a long drill bit in order
to drill the brackets far enough into the timber
to offer correct support. A common problem with
attaching radiators to studwork walls is that it
can limit the shape and size of the radiator, as
this will be determined by the position of the
timber. For this reason, where possible, we would
recommend that you attach the radiator to masonry
wall.

Masonry/Brickwork Walls Hanging the radiator on
masonry walls (aka brickwork walls), is much
easier. They do have some plaster to go through,
but thats easy enough to manage and it doesnt
affect the structural strength of the wall.
These walls are much stronger than studwork
walls, and so your choice of suitable radiator is
much wider too. You can choose big radiators,
including wall mounted electric radiators, and it
will not affect the wall. All you need to do to
affix the radiator to the wall is simply to screw
in the brackets. Its as easy as that.
