Parkinson’s Disease : overview, symptoms, causes, treatment and diagnosis

Description:

Parkinson's disease affects the way you move. It happens when there is a problem with certain nerve cells in the brain. Normally, these nerve cells make an important chemical called dopamine. Dopamine sends signals to the part of your brain that controls movement. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Title: Parkinson’s Disease : overview, symptoms, causes, treatment and diagnosis

1
Parkinsons Disease
2
Parkinsons Disease
  • Parkinson's disease  is a degenerative disease
of the central nervous system, which affects the
motor system. The cause of the disease is mainly
unknown, but it is due to the death of the cells
in a portion of mid-brain. Collection of
mis-folded protein in the brain witch can't be
degraded due to certain mutation is other genes
in the Lewy bodies of the neurons, which doesn't
allow the motor neuron to work properly. Lewy
bodies are abnormal circular structure which are
found in the cytoplasm of the neuron
cells.Parkinson's mostly occur to 1 percent
population to person mostly above 65 years of
    age.
  • In 2015, PD affected 6.2 million people, with
    117,400 deaths worldwide.
  • Here, nerve cells don't produce enough of
    chemical, which is dopamine.
  • With adverse of this disease, people have trouble
in walking, talking or doing simple things
  • Even there are events of depression, anxiety,
    stress etc.

3
Symptoms of Parkinson's disease
  • Diagnosing the symptoms of Parkinson may be very
difficult, as it can often be misguided with
    other diseases.
  • Early symptoms may include
  • Tremor or shaking
  • Loss of smell
  • Trouble moving or walking
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Small handwriting
  • Stooping or hunching over (can't stand straight)
  • Masked face
  • Soft and low voice
  • With increase in PD, certain chronic symptoms can
    be seen such as
  • tremor of the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face
  • bradykinesia or slowness of movement
  • rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk
  • postural instability or impaired balance and
    coordination

4
Causes of Parkinson's
  • Causes of Parkinson's are not known.
  • But it is mostly caused by genetic factors or
    environmental conditions.
  • Patient having a family history of PD, and
exposed to certain toxic chemicals tend to have a
    higher than others.

5
Risk factors of Parkinson's disease
  • In PD, males are more affected than females.
  • Person of mostly above 65 years of age are more
    affected by PD.
  • People exposed to pesticides and having a prior
head injury are more risk to PD.
  • Having a family person with PD, can be the most
    cause a risk forParkinson's disease

6
Treatments of Parkinson's
  • There is no particular treatment for Parkinson's
    disease.
  • As a initial treatment, certain antiparkinson
    medication L-DOPA (levodopa), with dopamine
agonists being used once levodopa becomes less
    effective.
  • As the disease progresses and neurons continue to
be lost, these medications become less effective
while at the same time they produce a
    complication marked by involuntary writhing
    movements.
  • Diet and some forms of rehabilitation can show
    some effectiveness at improving symptoms.
  • Surgery to place microelectrodes for deep brain
stimulation has been used to reduce motor
symptoms in severe cases where drugs are
    ineffective.1
  • Evidence for treatments for the
    non-movement-related symptoms of PD, such
as sleep disturbances and emotional problems, is
    less strong.

7
Diagnosis of Parkinson's
  • There is no test to confirm Parkinson's disease.
  • A doctor can confirm it by knowing the person's
family history and by some neurological tests.
  • Patients of Parkinson's undergo certain
disturbance and emotional up downs. Support from
family is the most important treatment for them.
