Yet for many people the momentum and excitement
we feel on January 1st soon dissipates as we move
into February. By March, most people have thrown
in the towel on their New Years resolutions and
give up entirely until the following year.

Some people will make a resolution that is simply
beyond their abilities and not possible to
achieve yet. For instance, they might say they
want to get a new job, buy house, and finish
their college education.

Thinking about it, achieving these are possible,
but they must be done in a particular order. One
would want to get their degree first, then find a
better job next.

Once they have established themselves at their
new job, finally buy the house they have been
dreaming about. Yet, reaching these goals is not
something that can be easily accomplished in a
single year.

Another reason people fall short is because they
are trying to do too much too quickly. Making
adjustments to our daily routines requires a
gradual shift to allow us time to adjust.

To illustrate, you want to get fit and lose
weight so you join a fitness centre. You go to
the fitness centre every day in January.

By the end of the month your body aches and your
muscles are sore. You tell yourself you need a
day off, so you take one. Then the next day you
make an excuse to not go again.

While you might go workout on the third day, the
frequency of skip days gradually increases until
you stop going.

Achieving resolutions requires working at them
gradually. Had you gone to the gym two or three
times a week to start with and kept at this slow,
but steady pace, you are not as inclined to give
up as quickly.

support system in place to provide encouragement
and guidance. This is where professional
counselling can be beneficial.
