  • What Is Ovarian Cyst?Ovarian cysts are
    fluid-filled, sac-like structures within an
ovary. Most cysts are never noticed and resolve
without women ever realizing that they are
there. When a cyst causes symptoms, pain in the
belly or pelvis is by far the most common one.
Most cysts are diagnosed by ultrasound, which is
the best imaging technique for detecting ovarian
cysts. Ultrasound imaging is painless and causes
no harm. What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of An
Ovarian Cyst?An ovarian cyst may be asymptomatic
or show similar signs and symptoms due to
    appendicitis or diverticulitis. Symptoms will
appear if there are large or when rupture of the
cysts occur. These symptoms are liable to vary or

CystsTreatment can consist of simple observation,
or it can include blood tests to help evaluate
the cyst for the potential of cancer. If the
tumour is causing severe pain, not resolving or
is suspicious in any way, then it needs to be
removed by surgery. Once the cyst is removed,
the growth is sent to a pathologist who examines
the tissue under a microscope to make the final
diagnosis as to the type of cyst present. The
ideal treatment of ovarian cysts depends on the
followingWoman's ageThe size (and change of
size) of the cystThe cyst's appearance on
ultrasoundTests For Ovarian Cysts / CancerA
pelvic examination will be conducted and your
gynaecologist may order some tests if there is a
suspicion of cancer Imaging TestsYour
gynaecologist will usually perform a pelvic
ultrasound as well as some blood tests to help
determine the risk of cancer. An ultrasound can
quickly determine whether the ovarian mass is
simple or complex in nature and whether it is
mostly cystic, solid mass or mixed in
texture.Other imaging tests maybe required to
help further define the ovarian or pelvic mass,
namely Computed Tomography (CT) ScansMagnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI) ScansComputed Tomography
(CT) Scans And Magnetic Resonance ScansCT scans
can detect large tumours very well, but it cannot
distinguish small ovarian tumours. They can also
detect the followingInflamed lymph nodesSigns of
cancer spread to liver or other organsSigns of
ovarian tumors distressing your kidneys and
bladderTumors growing into nearby
structuresMagnetic Resonance Scans can help to
differentiate texture of the mass as well as
assess the blood vessels within it. Dr. Regina
Zuzarte - Ng Gynecologist is an individual from
Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of
Singapore and Society for Colposcopy and Cervical
Pathology of Singapore. Some of the services
gave by the specialist are General gynecology
(menstrual problems, fibroids, ovarian cysts,
contraception, urogynaecology),Pre-pregnancy
advice,Infertility Evaluation/Treatment,Pregnancy
care and conveyance and menopause exhortation
and so forth. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled
sacs or pockets in an ovary or on its surface.
Women have two ovaries each about the size and
shape of an almond on each side
3
of the uterus. Eggs (ova), which develop and
mature in the ovaries, are released in monthly
cycles during the childbearing years. Many women
have ovarian cysts at some time. Most ovarian
cysts present little or no discomfort and are
harmless. The majority disappears without
treatment within a few months.
However, ovarian cysts especially those that
have ruptured can cause serious symptoms. To
protect your health, get regular pelvic exams and
know the symptoms that can signal a potentially
serious problem. Symptoms Most cysts don't
cause symptoms and go away on their own. However,
a large ovarian cyst can cause Pelvic pain a
dull or sharp ache in the lower abdomen on the
side of the cyst Fullness or heaviness in your
abdomen Bloating When to see a doctor Seek
immediate medical attention if you have Sudden,
severe abdominal or pelvic pain Pain with fever
or vomiting
4
If you have these signs and symptoms or those of
shock cold, clammy skin rapid breathing and
lightheadedness or weakness see a doctor right
away. Risk factors Your risk of developing an
ovarian cyst is heightened by Hormonal
problems. These include taking the fertility drug
clomiphene (Clomid), which is used to cause you
to ovulate. Pregnancy. Sometimes, the cyst that
forms when you ovulate stays on your ovary
throughout your pregnancy. Endometriosis. This
condition causes uterine endometrial cells to
grow outside your uterus. Some of the tissue can
attach to your ovary and form a growth. A severe
pelvic infection. If the infection spreads to the
ovaries, it can cause cysts. A previous ovarian
cyst. If you've had one, you're likely to develop
more. Complications Some women develop less
common types of cysts that a doctor finds during
a pelvic exam. Cystic ovarian masses that
develop after menopause might be cancerous
(malignant). That's why it's important to have
regular pelvic exams. Infrequent complications
associated with ovarian cysts include Ovarian
torsion. Cysts that enlarge can cause the ovary
to move, increasing the chance of painful
twisting of your ovary (ovarian torsion).
Symptoms can include an abrupt onset of severe
pelvic pain, nausea and vomiting. Ovarian torsion
can also decrease or stop blood flow to the
ovaries. Rupture. A cyst that ruptures can cause
severe pain and internal bleeding. The larger
the cyst, the greater the risk of rupture.
Vigorous activity that affects the pelvis, such
as vaginal intercourse, also increases the
risk. Prevention
5
Although there's no way to prevent ovarian cysts,
regular pelvic examinations help ensure that
changes in your ovaries are diagnosed as early as
possible. Be alert to changes in your monthly
cycle, including unusual menstrual symptoms,
especially ones that persist for more than a few
cycles. Talk to your doctor about changes that
concern you. When most women feel pain in their
abdomen, they just assume its menstrual cramps.
Some people feel these cramps as a subtle,
pressure-like sensation, while others cramps
feel like hot knives stabbing into them. We can
even experience similarly uncomfortable
sensations during ovulation. Women are so used
to having pelvic discomfort from time to time
that we usually just brush it off and try to
ignore it. Sometimes, though, the pain indicates
something much more serious than menstrual
cramps. Our ovaries, which produce eggs and
female hormones, can sometimes have cysts on
them these can cause significant pain and
discomfort. Its scary, but we all need to know
more about whats causing our pelvic pain. After
all, it could be caused by things like
diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and
ovarian cysts. Learn more about the signs and
symptoms of ovarian cysts below, as well as what
to do if you think youre experiencing these
cysts. For More Information You Can Contact
