About Mehta Spine
  • Mehta Spine represents a state of the art,
evidence based practice in the treatment of
    spinal problems.
  • Our values encompass safety, transparency, high
quality of care and documentation of outcomes of
the treatment. Choosing the right surgeon is the
single most important step in the quest for
successful treatment. Though not everyone needs
surgery, we believe that an understanding of the
problem helps us in individualising the
    treatment.
  • Discussions around the natural history of the
condition and obtaining the correct scans leads
to the appreciation of the available treatment
options. This provides a foundation of a good
    outcome.
  • Mr Jwalant S Mehta is a consultant spinal surgeon
specialising in spinal deformity corrections and
treatment of all spinal conditions. His is based
in Birmingham at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital
    and the Birmingham Childrens Hospital.
Additionally, he has practising privileges with
    the BMI and Spire group

Adult Spinal Deformity
  • Some of the spinal deformities that start earlier
in life and are untreated can become problematic
later in adult life. Sometimes advanced
degenerative changes can present as a deformity.
Inability to stand upright the commonest problem
    reported.
  • Whilst most of these need investigations such
as MRI scan to determine the likely source of
pain and nerve compressions. Simpler treatments
such as physiotherapy, pain management and
injections are the start of the treatment.

Adult Spinal Deformity
  •  Some patients have very intrusive symptoms.
These may require a major surgical
reconstruction. The pros and cons of such a
reconstruction have to be carefully considered
    and discussed.
  • Surgery is undertaken for nerve compression,
difficulty in maintaining and upright stance and
    problems maintaining a horizontal gaze.
    Pre-operative considerations include bone density
assessments (DEXA scan) CT scans upright x-rays
    and a thorough anaesthetic assessment.
